Job Summary/Basic Function:The director of media relations will serve as Boise State University’s public information officer. This position will help build and drive the Office of Communications and Marketing’s annual media relations plan for both earned and owned media channels, in alignment with university priorities and in partnership with leaders from strategic communications, marketing, university events, legislative affairs, executive communications, and divisions and colleges across campus. This position is responsible for communicating the value of higher education to external stakeholders by positioning university faculty and administrators as distinct thought leaders and subject matter experts, as well as telling Boise State student and alumni success stories. This role will cultivate relationships with traditional local, regional and national media outlets, while also adapting to a changing media landscape and building creative ways to tell and share the Boise State story. Duties include developing media opportunities and events on campus, and serving as the media’s direct contact with Boise State University. The media relations director will work hands-on to create brand-level university communications to the media, including articles, press kits, fact sheets, talking points, press releases and other content initiatives.Essential Functions:65 % of time Director of Media Relations will:Develop and implement an enterprise-level plan for pitching local and national media.Work across the Office of Communications and Marketing to develop creative ways to tell stories that are strategically aligned.Explore new and creative ways of sharing Boise State stories externally.Develop a deep understanding of current issues, trends and narratives in the media in order to identify and develop engaging storylines that will attract earned media attention to best position Boise State.Lead day-to-day efforts of media relations including creating press releases, press briefings, media events, pitch materials, talking points, fact sheets, media advisories, scripts, background information and media training; manage approval process with internal stakeholders and partners.Develop and maintain strong relationships with local and national media, as well as key external stakeholders, influencers and partners.Serve as the university’s spokesperson and media contact.Serve as the point of contact for all media communications.Track media requests and build timely responses.Additional Job Duties (30%):Provide media analysis, training and counsel to senior leaders and faculty on media relations matters.Build relationships with faculty and campus leaders, and develop strategies and recommendations for media plans for a wide variety of audiences.Work with the Office of Communications and Marketing on an owned channel strategy to deploy stories externally.Connect paid media and marketing campaigns and Boise State magazine features with earned media opportunities.Collaborate on media relations strategy for Boise State News.Build and implement a media relations website with story packages.Build weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual media relations analytic reports.Help lead on issues and crisis communications as needed.5% Perform other duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:Strong writing and editing skills.Strong public speaking skills.Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate to a wide range of audiences.Experience establishing long-range media relations goals and objectives and implementing the strategies and tactics to achieve them.Experience working on media strategy for an organization with proven examples of growth for both earned and owned media.Experience packaging stories and pitching them to the media.Digitally fluent in the complex media landscape.Knowledge of media monitoring and social listening systems, analysis and reporting.Superior organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.Self-starter, proactive and able to work independently and in team settings.Proven ability to independently manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.Minimum Qualifications:● Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 8 years experience including 5 years managerial experience.Preferred Qualifications:● Previous experience managing media relations and serving as a public information officer for an organization or within higher education or experience working for a public relations agency or news organization.Salary and Benefits:Salary range is $82,000 to $90,000 annually and is commensurate with experience.
