Position Description

Student Worker: Library / Bookstore

This is a 20 hour-a-week cross-trained position on the GCTS-Charlotte campus with responsibilities in the library and the GCTS Bookstore. The Harold-Lindsell Library will be the home base for this position. Work hours will be primarily, but not limited to, Tuesday through Friday 9 am to 4 pm. Some evening and weekend hours will be required when classes are scheduled. The student worker will provide library support for both in-person and networked education students. The position will also provide support to the bookstore manager one day a week, but report directly to the Charlotte campus librarian.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is a student currently enrolled in one of the master's degree programs at GCTS. The candidate must have some prior customer service experience. Candidates must be able to work with a wide range of personality types and must be able to remain calm under pressure, especially in troubleshooting situations. The candidate should be confident with technology and able to learn new technology easily. (Training will be provided.) The candidate must be able to communicate clearly.

Responsibilities:

The student worker will perform the following tasks in the course of their work. There will be times when there will be multiple demands placed on the worker, and in those cases the worker will need to prioritize the importance of tasks. The supervisor will provide guidance and support for helping establish these priorities.

Library: The student worker will handle a variety of basic library tasks including circulation desk functions, shelving books and periodicals, use of electronic resources, providing library assistance as needed, monitoring and answering the HL library email, and other tasks as assigned by the librarian. The worker is expected to interact well with library users, members of the seminary community, and others serving on the library staff. Training will be provided by the library team.

Specific training will be provided in the following areas: Book cataloging, book processing, the Library of Congress cataloging system, basic collection development (under the librarian's supervision), LibGuides, advanced use of the WorldCat search engine, WMS library system, and other needed library systems or programs.

Bookstore: The student worker will also be trained by the bookstore manager to assist with processing orders and shipping, restocking items, yearly inventory, sales, bookstore email, and other assigned tasks. This is a smaller part of the overall position, but no less important.

Scheduling: This is a part-time 20 hour a week position. Workdays will be Tuesday through Friday with the occasional evening or weekend. One day a week will be in the bookstore with the remaining three in the library. The student worker will be scheduled for and must remain available for the duration of class sessions (Spring, Summer, and Fall). Should a personal or work emergency arise, the worker will communicate with the supervisor regarding that emergency as quickly as possible.
