Nature of Work

Semi-skilled Custodian I responsible for providing routine cleaning and maintenance services to assigned city buildings. Work is performed under the general direction of the Custodian II.

Essential Functions of Work

Under the direction of Custodian II, keeps the Library and Library grounds clean and well maintained.Performs building cleaning services, including floor sweeping and waxing; dusting and polishing furniture; washing windows and walls; vacuuming and shampooing carpets; and cleaning restrooms. Uses proper safety procedures for storage, usage, handling and disposal of potentially hazardous waste and cleaning materials Performs minor building maintenance repairs, including changing light bulbs; conducting minor electrical repairs; oiling heater motors and pumps; and other similar activities.

Performs snow removal, lawn care and flower bed maintenance.

Assists in the day-to-day functioning of the LibraryDelivesr materials, packages and donations to appropriate staff and departments In cooperation with other staff, empties book drops building as needed. Assists and/or perform opening and closing procedures of the building.

Contributes to making the Great Falls Public Library environment a welcoming, safe and inviting placeEnforces Great Falls Public Library policies (including behavior policies)Arranges and performs setup of chairs, tables and other equipment for various meetings Arranges and moves Library furniture as needed Assists with displays as needed

Education and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent. One year of experience in building cleaning and maintenance desirable.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidate must possess or have the ability to obtain valid Montana driver's license

Requirements of Work

Working knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in building cleaning and maintenance. Working knowledge of the use of basic hand tools. Ability to maintain boilers, hot water heaters, energy efficient furnaces, and related equipment desired.

Knowledge of the library's policies, procedures and practices Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Deals tactfully, respectfully and effectively with patrons and staff Effectively promotes enthusiasm for library services

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisor, patrons and the public.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position does not supervise staff.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors at the library. Exposure to chemicals used for cleaning, noise, cold, heat, and wind is frequent.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, reach, ride and perform similar body movements. Must have the ability to perform heavy physical work and to lift and carry up to 75 pounds occasionally, over 50 pounds with a two person assist; the possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate cleaning equipment, basic hand tools and a motor vehicle; the ability to talkand hear in person or by telephone; and the ability to see and read instructions and reports.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

The work schedule is a 25-hour work week, Sunday through Saturday. This position is a non-exempt and eligible for overtime. Any overtime must be authorized prior to working.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
