Position Specific Responsibilities

The Wichita State University Police Department is seeking a motivated, customer-service oriented professional to join our team as an Emergency Communication Specialist. We partner with our University Community to keep them safe and help make our campus a better place to live, work and learn. This individual needs to have the ability to work calmly under pressure, make time-sensitive decisions in emergency situations, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, excel in a team-oriented environment and be adaptable to change.

As an Emergency Communication Specialist, you will be responsible for handling incoming calls and requests for service by public safety personnel, general public and campus emergency systems; be responsible for dispatching officers to calls utilizing a radio system and computer-aided-dispatch; monitor security equipment, process alarms, and maintain operations in the Emergency Communications Center.

Summary of Responsibilities

Transmits and receives law enforcement and public safety staff communications in accordance with government regulations. Monitors, documents and reports all activities as required. Communicates information and services with general public.

Essential Functions

Answers incoming communications for all emergency and non-emergency calls, and maintains control of conversations prior to emergency response team arrival. Determines appropriate level of emergency response services based on available information and applicable laws and regulations. Communicates general law enforcement information, University policies, parking regulations, weather conditions, and public record releases.

Transmits or communicates information to appropriate emergency staff, agencies and communication systems utilizing appropriate terms and effective response techniques. Acts as emergency information and security backup according to required regulations.

Maintains accurate law enforcement records, incident documentation, and officer location and activity status in accordance with federal, state and local laws, regulations, and University policy.

Receives and responds to emergency communications during and after disaster incidents and other extreme conditions. Monitors and efficiently responds to security alarms and other emergency notifications. Receives and relays requests for emergency repairs and maintenance utilizing appropriate resources.

Processes law enforcement requests to check for warrants, driver status, previous convictions and criminal history.

Licenses, Certificates and Registrations

Kansas Criminal Justice Information System (KCJIS) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certifications within six (6) months of hire date
