The Position

Role Description:This role pertains to the design and execution of the gRED (Genentech Research and Early Development) Center Project in South San Francisco. As the gRED Center Design Manager, you will be responsible for the design development and design process management of the gRED Center and associated supporting projects.Responsibilities:The responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:The Design Manager is accountable and owns the management of the design process throughout the entire project life cycle. The Design Manager reports to the Director of Design Engineering, with an indirect report to the Project Director of the gRED Center. The Design Manager will partner with the gRED Center Project Director and gRED Center User Team Lead (UTL) to support the successful delivery of all aspects of the project.

The Design Manager is responsible for leading the dedicated Genentech Design Engineering team for the project, ensuring that the team has the appropriate Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), with the processes and metrics to implement appropriate design solutions. This includes but is not limited to an Architect, Mechanical, Electrical, Automation and Process Engineers, C&Q (Commissioning and Qualification), EH&S, and Sustainability SMEs.

The Design Manager will partner closely with the User Team Lead (UTL) in order to align with, coordinate input from, and influence key customers and stakeholders (e.g. gRED, REWE, Site Operations, EH&S, Security and others) on project design strategies.

The Design Manager will be responsible for facilitating feasibility and programming studies, BEAM (Business and Engineering Alignment Meetings) efforts and management of the Design Phases of the project, with the ultimate outcomes being strategic alignment with the network, project endorsement decisions and thorough options analysis and technical recommendations.

The Design Manager will oversee the Architect/Engineer of Record for the assigned capital project, and lead the A/E management and performance to produce design deliverables. Aligned with the gRED Center Project Director, the Design Manager will help to develop and drive the vendor pre-qualification process as needed, and participate in the vendor selection process. The Design Manager serves as the focal point for the A/E with regards to Design Package content, schedule, staffing, resource planning, change control process and quality control. The Design Manager works in concert with the Project Director to address any performance issues.

The Design Manager supports project execution planning in concert with the Project Director through all phases of design planning, execution, and closeout. The Design Manager helps to develop the design packaging/sequencing strategy, schedule and content to support the execution plan.

The Design Manager will attend all key design meetings and will ensure adherence to the requirements outlined in the Engineering Manual document process. A key function of the role will also be to help align the designs to Roche/Genentech and site specific standards.

The following delineates the responsibilities of the Design Manager during project Phases:

Design/Scope Development Phase: The Design Manager helps to establish the scope definition and review processes to address the following:Oversees technical resolution and innovation and furthers the development of projects through all design and construction phases consistent with the scope of work of projects and goals of Roche/Genentech.

Ensures the project conforms to Roche/Genentech and industry standards and specifications.

Ensures design is in alignment with business and stakeholder requirements. Provides technical and managerial feedback to the design team and coordinates reviews/interaction with the Genentech SME team and appropriate parties.

Leads analysis of Lessons Learned from network and external industry projects for consideration in design strategy.

Leads Design and Stage Gate Reviews, Energy Reviews, EH&S and Sustainability Reviews and ensures alignment with network requirements and directives.

Assists in the development of BIM Execution Strategy and ensures alignment with network BIM requirements.

Project Budget Management: Participates and contributes to this continuous process over the course of the project, with specific focus on the design team contracts.

Schedule changes: Reviews proposed changes against the current project schedule, reviewing A/E's contract schedule of deliverables against project needs.

Changes due to business needs or field conditions: Ensures necessary data, review, and feedback to all scopes of work, logistics, and project specific conditions to assure alignment with stakeholder requirements.

Operations and Maintenance: The Design Manager, in partnership with the project UTL, is focused on developing operations and maintenance requirements to be included in the design definition.

Execution phase: The Design Manager manages design changes and clarifications, including:Manages changes to the design documents throughout the execution phase and supports reconciliation with the cost report and schedule, in partnership with the Project Director.

Supports definition and implementation of a project Document Control process.

Supports definition and implementation of processes for coordinating documentation review with internal stakeholders, during construction, including but not limited to:Submittal reviews

RFI reviews

Change Orders: Ensure review of change orders for scope and design impacts

Requirements:Minimum of a Bachelor degree in Architecture or Engineering.

Registered Architect or Engineer - Licensed in the State of California.

Minimum of 15 years experience in architecture, engineering or a related field with strong bio-pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical technology experience, and at least 5 of which involved direct line management. Also demonstrate previous experience working for an A/E consulting firm.

Direct experience with project programming, strategic planning and stakeholder management. Experience in scientific research and the bio-pharmaceutical industry is preferred.

Experience as a project leader for multiple complex capital projects within pharmaceutical or related industries.

Understanding of sustainable certifications (LEED, WELL, Fitwel or other), experience in project management, LEAN\Six Sigma certification, and\or experience working in a campus environment is preferred.

Must have excellent communication, presentation, leadership, interpersonal, collaborative, conflict resolution, and negotiating skills.

Excellent working knowledge of project design and construction.

Strong communication (written/verbal) skills.

Excellent organization and planning skills.

Advanced Microsoft Office and Google Suite skills.

Exceptional teamwork and collaboration skills are essential to facilitate the work of cross-functional and interdepartmental teams.

Must be dependable, have a strong attention to detail, and be proficient in coordination tasks.

Self-starter and ability to work with minimum or no supervision

Confidence in leading a team of project professionals, positive attitude, and a good temperament for stakeholder interaction is a must.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $154,800 - $287,600 USD Annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.
