This role sits in the global Corporate Affairs & Communications organization and provides corporate communications and public affairs counsel and service to multiple executives in the organization. The Director, Corporate Communications will support in corporate-wide media relations, with responsibility for our strategic CEO communications, executive thought leadership, policy and issues management activities. This position requires strong understanding of the media and corporate communications landscape, excellent writing and project management skills with a high degree of focus on details, strategic enterprise thinking, industry knowledge, agility and experience with crisis and issue management, and an ability to forge strong working relationships across teams.

This role reports to the VP, Corporate Communications, and is based in New York.

How will you make an impact in this role?

Quickly develop a deep understanding of American Express, its business and customers to find/create opportunities to tell the American Express story.

Support development and execution of proactive media relations strategies to enhance the company’s reputation and visibility of key strategic initiatives.

Support planning, preparation and execution of CEO communications, including the development of engagement plans, briefing books, talking points, speeches, social media content, presentations, and other content needs across media relations, investor, employee and customer communications.

Drive coordination of enterprise and executive thought leadership opportunities among the Corporate Affairs & Communications team, including holistically managing executive speaking engagements, business and industry networks, external awards and recognitions.

Assist with internal and external communications of the General Counsel Organization and Enterprise Strategy group and their senior leaders.

Effectively and quickly create/edit communications content (press releases, company statements, talking points, FAQs, etc.) in alignment with the corporate narrative.

Manage issues and crisis communications by demonstrating good judgment, sound positioning, and implementation of decision-making frameworks.

Help manage incoming media requests and advise business leadership on strategy and tactics.

Foster relationships with media and support VP of Corporate Communications in her capacity as a spokesperson for the company.

Monitor, measure and report on media coverage of American Express.

Partner effectively with communications colleagues and strategic business partners to drive coordination of enterprise-wide communications and thought leadership activities, and ensure consistency in messaging.

Serve as a relationship manager with public relations agencies and other external partners, including media, event organizers, non-profits and vendors.

Minimum

Qualifications

Minimum 7 years communications/PR experience with demonstrated ability to handle all types of media and corporate communications

Excellent written and verbal skills

In-depth communications experience, with expertise in developing and implementing strategic PR and social media programs

Strong project management skills and ability to thrive while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced work environment

Proven track record of exercising sound judgment and clear decision-making under tight deadlines

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to create connections across functions and levels

Experience working directly with senior-level executives

Strong business acumen, analytical and strategic thinking skills

Excellent judgment and experience in managing crises and issues response

Demonstrated relationship management skills, particularly in working with PR agencies and other external partners.

Expert in the use of MS Office products, especially Word and PowerPoint, and able to develop graphics and visual design.

Qualifications

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
