Job Description Summary:

Performs budget development and negotiates complex clinical research budgets with clinical research sponsors for assigned proposed/awarded clinical trials managed through the Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA). The budget specialist serves as an internal resource for clinical research budget development. Position will help track timely movement of research agreements through grants management system to signature. Provides guidance on grant and contract questions. These responsibilities span all aspects of the grants/contracts award lifecycle and evaluation of business processes.

Job Description:

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

Prepare, maintain, and negotiate budgets related to clinical trial activity funded by federal or non-profit sponsors for the KUMC-SPA.Work with Principal Investigators and the clinical research teams to develop internal budgets that include all costs applicable to the study. Partner with departments to develop detailed final budgets by identifying all activities, tests, and procedures to be performed during the conduct of the study based on the protocol, study calendar and other study documents.Ensure costs are calculated in accordance with KUMC and sponsor guidelines to ensure accurate cost allocation and resource allocation in clinical trial budgets.Review incoming subawards, sponsored research agreements, and amendments from other agencies by analyzing and interpreting the termsServe as a resource for contract language to ensure fair payment terms associated with clinical study budgets.Maintain a portfolio of budgets and contracts in different stages of negotiationServe as the primary point of contact with clinical trial sponsors if there are questions about draft budgets or contracts prior to award execution.Work closely with other KUMC stakeholders (OCTA, OGC, KUCC, RCO, UKHA, PIs, department admins) to identify and implement processes to ensure the timely build of budgets based on coverage analysis and budget quotes from auxiliary departments and the accurate and timely processing of clinical trial agreements through the award set-up process.Review study protocols, sponsor agreements, informed consent forms, and related documents as neededEnsure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and specific regulations by monitoring such requirements on an ongoing basisStay informed of developments in the field of clinical research finance and other related topics

Work Environment

Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment, which does not usually subject the employee to any unpleasant elements.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor\'s Degree in business, science, or other related discipline.

Work Experience: Minimum of 2 years of applicable experience related to clinical administration and/or research.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Master\'s degree in a relevant field of study (accounting, business, or life sciences)

Certifications/Licenses: Certified Research Administrator (CRA) as granted by the Research Administrators Certification Council (RACC)

Work Experience:

Minimum three (3 years of Business Office experience in a healthcare environment or Research Office experience or three (3) to five (5) years of clinical research budget development and negotiation experienceKnowledge of higher education institutional sponsored projects and accounting procedures or at least experience working in an academic setting.

Skills

Ability to work proficiently in software available at KUMC, including MS Office Suite (especially Outlook and Excel).Basic ability to work in software available at KUMC, including Huron Research Suite, and Workday.Excellent oral and written communication skills.
