Polysomnographic Trainee

A sleep trainee develops competency in and performs basic sleep testing procedures and associated interventions. The sleep trainee works under direct supervision of a sleep technician or a sleep technologist.

JOB FUNCTIONS :

Develop skills in collecting, analyzing, and integrating patient information to identify and meet the patient-specific needs and determining final testing parameters/procedure in conjunction with the ordering physicians and sleep center protocols.Explain the procedure and orients the patient for either in center or home sleep apnea testing (HSAT).Learn to review pertinent information from the patient's history and verify the medical order. When patient arrives, verifies identification, collects documentation and obtains consent for the study.Learn to follow procedural protocols, such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness (MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration to ensure collection of appropriate data.Develop skills in the application of electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.Learn to perform appropriate physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals and make required adjustments. Perform "lights out" procedure to establish and document baseline values. Follow "lights out" procedure to verify integrity of collection data.Learn to document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.Develop skills in scoring sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.Develop skills in scoring clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) utilizing American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) standards.Develop skills in demonstrating the knowledge and skills necessary to perform portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download.Learns and applies prescribed cleaning and disinfection procedures per sleep centers protocols.Learn and apply monitoring of patient safety and adherence to patient safety protocols.Learn to identify artifact, inadequate signals, and equipment failures and generate an accurate report.Requirements

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.6 months of direct patient care experience or one year of postsecondary education. ORCurrent enrollment in an accredited educational program leading to an associate degree with an emphasis in sleep technology.Conditions of Employment:

Must complete supervised on-the-job polysomnography duties.Within 6 months of employment, successfully complete the designated AASM A-STEP Self-Learning (online) training modules and be registered to take the CPSGT exam.Within 18 months of employment, must be registered to take the RPSGT exam and provide evidence of application submission by 19 months of employment.Within 2 years of employment, must pass the RPSGT exam. (Applicant can take the RPSGT exam up to three times, but must pass the exam prior to 2 years of employment) Only 1st exam fees covered by IHMG.Must remain employed with IHMG at least one year after becoming a Registered Polysomnography Technologist. (If leaving IHMG employment prior to one year after becoming a Registered Polysomnography Technologist, will reimburse IHMG for A-STEP and exam fees).Experience & Certifications:

Current CPR certification required.6 months direct patient care experience requiredPERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge:

Must have 10 hours of continuous education per year.Comply with applicable laws, guidelines and standards regarding safety/infection control issues.Follow HIPPA policies to maintain the privacy and security of patient information.Skills:

Excellent Customer Service.Able to work hands-on with patients.Good verbal and written communication skills.Basic computer skills.Abilities:

Able to work hands-on with patients.Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.Work Environment:

Position in a well-lighted office environment. Frequent interaction with a varied and diverse patient population.Employee may be exposed to chemical vapors such as cleaning and disinfecting solutions. There may also be skin contact with these substances.Employee may be exposed to infectious agents including bloodborne pathogensPhysical Requirements:

Requires manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination for the operation of the sleep study equipment; training on equipment provided. Frequent lifting & assist patients in and out of wheelchairs with weights up to 300 lbs.Involves sitting approximately 80 percent of the day, walking or standing the remainder.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and talk or hear.The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.Safety:
