Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is looking for a skilled Graphic Designer to join our team. This role is vital in creating and producing high-quality graphic materials for the Office of Family Health Services (OFHS) and WIC programs. These materials will have a significant impact statewide, reaching a diverse audience across Virginia.

The Graphic Designer will collaborate with both internal and external clients to develop visually appealing materials that align with VDH brand standards and support effective, evidence-based communication.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:• Collaborate with internal customers to develop, design, and complete illustrations and graphics for various Office of Family Health Services and WIC program projects, including presentations, marketing campaigns, health education materials, recruitment materials, and displays.• Utilize industry-standard software like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and potentially motion graphics software to create professional visuals in both static and animated formats.• Ensure all graphic materials adhere to VDH brand standards and contribute to the creation of evidence-based, effective communication tools.• Manage graphic design projects, ensuring deadlines are met, accurate progress reports are provided, and a clear scope of work is maintained.• Assist with website design and updates using WordPress for the Office of Family Health Services, ensuring compliance with VDH brand guidelines.• Develop and schedule compelling social media graphics designed to drive health behavior changes.• Contribute to the Office of Health Services content calendar by creating evergreen graphics and infographics.• Serve as a resource for internal customers by providing assistance with desktop publishing and graphic layout suggestions.• Facilitate the timely completion of purchasing documents related to graphics and publication orders.• Act as a liaison between internal and external customers on graphics-related projects, including print orders.• Provide support for video production as needed.• Perform other duties as assigned, including assisting during emergency declarations.

Minimum Qualifications• Proficiency in graphic design, with an emphasis on creating visuals for various marketing and communication purposes.• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with website design principles (specifically WordPress).• Strong understanding of visual design principles and best practices (color theory, composition, typography).• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with clients and internal teams.• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.• Experience with social media content creation is a plus.

Additional Considerations• Working knowledge of VDH brand guidelines and accessibility standards.• Experience in the public sector or involvement in public campaigns demonstrating an understanding of clear, concise, and culturally sensitive communication for diverse audiences.
