SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Under supervision of the Director of the Office Engagement, Behavioral Health, and Academics and in collaboration with the Community Schools Coordinator, the wellness trainer designs and implements a structured wellness program for diverse populations, advocating and promoting wellness, a healthy and active lifestyle, and healthy eating behaviors in assigned schools. Work of this class includes the development and implementation of training programs, workshops and presentations to train, support and provide materials and resources for school staff to engage and instruct students in matters related to wellness, fitness, restorative justice, and positive emotional and behavioral health. The wellness trainer provides training to assigned school staff through in-person as well as, synchronous and asynchronous virtual formats. Assists and supports school staff with presentations, events and workshops for students and families with topics that support positive emotional and mental health for students, families and the school community. Provides mindfulness and restorative justice training, materials and weekly guidance to community school staff to implement in school settings. Develops and trains school staff members to serve as a mindfulness/restorative justice coaches in their schools. Supports students with effective mindfulness and restorative justice practices. Supports the goals and objectives of the MCPS Community Schools model. Collaborates with all other MCPS offices to ensure that student mental and emotional health supports, training and resources are aligned across the system.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

This position requires knowledge of mental health and emotional well-being strategies and resources including self-care principles and techniques, internet/mobile applications, community provider resources, workplace mental health initiatives, mindfulness techniques and restorative justice practices. Knowledge of restorative justice practices. Working knowledge of community schools model. Ability to prepare and deliver effective and engaging wellness training programs to small and large groups using in-person and virtual formats. Strong interpersonal communication and human relations skills. Ability to develop and deliver training programs that inspire others to recognize the rewards of psychological good health and work toward achieving competence in personal health, wellness and emotional well-being. Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, google suite, web-based applications and social media skills required.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

High School or GED diploma required. Associate or Bachelor's degree preferred. College courses in mindfulness, restorative justice, kinesiology, Yoga, exercise physiology, physical education, exercise science/fitness leadership, dietetics, nutrition, public health or other exercise-based discipline preferred. Experience developing and presenting informational/ training programs to a diverse audience. Ability to assess and develop presentations and training materials suitable for school-aged children. Experience coaching, mentoring and working with adults required. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
