SET THE COURSE

Creative and strategic visionary for Tommy Bahama Women’s Sportswear Knits and Sweaters. Understand the Tommy Bahama lifestyle and aesthetic and translate it appropriately for womenswear. The Design Director works closely with the VP of Women’s Sportswear Design and is responsible for the product design process including market research, design creation, specifications and fit. In addition, the position is responsible for managing a staff of designers, associates and assistants. The position is also responsible for strategically growing the Women’s sportswear business and for ensuring that the development cycle milestones are met.

BE THE ISLAND GUIDE

Partner with the VP to actively lead the conceptual development of innovative and directional products.

Research global womenswear markets to identify new trends, fabrics, and techniques.

Fully embrace and understand who the Tommy Bahama Customer is now and who we want to acquire.

Partner with wholesale and direct to guest teams to understand the strategic business direction of the company.

Work with VP on presenting category to Leadership including developments in print and style.

Demonstrate highly effective cross functional collaboration with Sourcing & Production, Merchandising and Technical Design teams.

Mentor and foster strong working relationships with direct reports.

Oversee and approve all design sample orders for these categories.

Review and check samples with designers and production.

Articulate the motivation and intent behind designs.

Work with category sourcing and development and travel for development needs.

Ensure staff receives appropriate training in order to do their jobs effectively.

Manage and provide feedback to design staff along with VP of Design.

Prioritize workloads and balance tight timelines for two overlapping seasons.

ESSENTIALS FOR LIFE IN PARADISE

Degree in Fashion Design, Business or related field.

Generally 10+ years experience as a Designer for a known retail brand.

Generally 5+ years management and leadership experience in the apparel industry.

Expert in design and conceptual skills.

Outstanding computer skills and knowledge of design technology developments.

Proven experience growing a line of business and expanding a customer base.

Excellent sense of style, color and ability to conceptualize a collection.

Strong ability to research and shop the markets to identify fashion trends.

Confidence to make decisions in order to facilitate design/production process.

Knowledge and ability to assess production standards, timelines, and quality of garments being produced.

Excellent time management skills and ability to adhere to tight development calendars.

Multiple factors will vary the applicable rate of pay for this role, including an individual’s experience, knowledge, and skillset, as well as work location and available budget.

Rate Range: $155,141.44 to $180,000.00
