Job Description
The New York Times is looking for an experienced photojournalist to join our award-winning, industry-leading staff. This versatile multimedia specialist works fluently in a variety of visual approaches and formats, and is exceptional in capturing stills and video, and reporting and writing to create immersive and sophisticated visually-driven stories. You will be predominantly focused on California coverage, but will also take on national assignments.
Your work will be published in an array of formats and surfaces, including visual essays, live vehicles, interactive digital formats, videos and social presentations. This variety of formats will inform your approach in the field and planning and conceptualizing of your assignments. You will help us achieve dynamic mobile-first presentations of your work, regularly incorporating verticals and video into your practice.
You are eager to innovate, you thrive on collaboration, you have impeccable news judgment, and technical and editorial expertise. You are experienced and comfortable covering breaking news and features and visually-driven long-form enterprise work.
This role is based in California, and will require occasional visits to NYC headquarters. While you will be focused on regional coverage, your work will also entail national assignments and travel.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $122,529.16 and $147,000.00.

Responsibilities:
- You will be assigned to create innovative visuals connected to the biggest news and themes of the day, and you will also be expected to generate and pitch your own story ideas related to your geographic coverage area.
- You will create photography and video, providing accurate captions, and original reporting on the ground.
- You will collaborate as a full journalistic partner with reporters and editors throughout the newsroom.
- You will cultivate local and regional sources and contacts and follow news to better inform and pursue your stories.
- You will seek diverse voices in your reporting to help our subscribers better understand the world. You are respectful, inclusive, generous and empathetic toward colleagues, our audience, and the communities we cover.
- You will work with senior editors on the desk and our security advisers to prepare for and follow strict safety protocols in the field.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:
- 6+ years of photojournalism experience.
- A strong portfolio of published work demonstrating excellence in visual storytelling across a variety of coverage lines and formats.
- Experience reporting and photographing in complex breaking news situations under intense deadlines and logistical pressure.
- Experience originating and pitching well researched and newsworthy storylines in your coverage area.
- Experience with videography, video editing, and post-production.
- Professional knowledge of a wide array of photographic equipment, Photoshop, Photo Mechanic, Premiere and/or other photo and video editing software.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Keen editorial news judgment and firm grasp of journalistic ethics.
- Strong reporting and writing skills.
- You demonstrate diplomacy, judiciousness, ingenuity, curiosity and are experienced in conveying the world to our readers with images that go beyond the expected.
- Enthusiasm for innovation and ongoing development of the technical and aesthetic elements of your visual journalism. An interest in and facility for learning new technologies and working with new equipment in pursuit of this development.
- Strong organizational, communication and collaborative skills
- Interest in collaboration on video projects that highlight the work and expertise of Times journalists and visual journalists in the field, including your own. Considerable comfort level reporting and occasionally appearing on camera.
- Willingness to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed.
