CNHF Senior Director Editorial and Development Strategy

The Senior Director of Editorial and Development Strategy at Children’s National Hospital Foundation reports to the Chief Marketing Officer. This position manages strategic content development for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of Children's National donors and prospects across major gifts, events, direct response and digital communications. This includes strategy and content development for the production of proposals, impact reports, emails, remarks, scripts and other written materials in support of fundraising initiatives and campaigns. The role requires a skilled writer and editor who can elevate donor-facing copy from across the Foundation, ensuring accuracy and consistency of style, tone and content.

The Senior Director is responsible for ensuring that content is shared across all Foundation channels to optimize donor engagement, increase awareness of the Foundation’s work and ensure efficiency of content development. These channels include but are not limited to the semiannual magazine, website, digital stewardship platform and social media channels as appropriate.

This position oversees the Foundation’s editorial team and contract employees as needed to ensure the best possible quality content and results. These responsibilities include working with and supporting individuals to improve their strategic, analytical, writing and editing skills. The Senior Director will assign projects and allocate resources based on fundraising priorities and ROI in collaboration with leadership team members.

This role requires close collaboration with designers and other members of the Foundation to deliver the most compelling content across all media, including events, video and web. The Senior Director will work successfully with multiple stakeholders across the Foundation and Hospital to build consensus and meet critical submission deadlines. This position requires consistent focus on improving operations of editorial function to streamline process and improve outcomes for the benefit of donors and philanthropic goals.

Required Skills/Knowledge

Demonstrated strength in persuasive writing and editing and proven record of successful philanthropic proposal writing or equivalent

Ability to set priorities and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment and simultaneously manage multiple projects at once

Management and understanding of budgets

Ability to translate scientific research

Skill in communicating effectively with a diverse range of professionals (executives, physicians, scientists, donors, development officers and administrators)

Ability to research information from a variety of internal and external sources, then synthesize and tailor it for proposals, reports and other communications

Skill in presentation and program development as well as speech writing and executive communications vital to strategic donor cultivation

Demonstrated leadership as a writer, editor, with significant experience in creative collaboration and project management

Ability to develop and manage a high level of detail for strategic projects

Ability to work independently to move projects forward when parameters are ambiguous and initiative to move things forward and seek consensus at key points

Ability to work collaboratively and think creatively

Interest and experience in philanthropic proposal writing in a medical setting is preferred

Versatility to produce compelling long and short form copy

Ability to adhere to AP style and institutional editorial guidelines

Proposal writing/stewardship/event program development

Work with gift officers, lead collaboration with faculty, scientists and other hospital staff to develop material necessary for philanthropic proposals, including project budgets

Conduct research from internal and external sources necessary for proposal development

Serve as primary writer for major gifts, delivering high-quality, compelling proposals and impact reports

Work with gift officers to manage proposal production pipeline on a regular basis, effectively guaranteeing that resources are properly deployed to produce results in a timely fashion

Work with business operations team to produce financial philanthropic data necessary for proposals and impact reports, when necessary

Provide master messaging documents for campaigns

Support writing team, ensuring editorial quality control and timely, successful project execution

Collateral material development

Serve as a resource to Foundation staff to ensure that messaging for all materials supports strategic initiatives, provide donor-centric perspective and meet the highest level of quality

Prepare and/or edit important major gift documents prepared by various team members including proposals, impact reports, stewardship functions and other collateral material in support of $5M+ donors and prospects

Strategic Planning

Serve as content strategists for major gift officers relating to campaigns, proposal development, impact reports and events

Manage key projects deemed important to the Foundation’s strategic direction, particularly those relating unrestricted fundraising

Develops budgets and project revenue based on strategic plans

Work strategically with executives and team members across the organization

Deliver

Monitor and support a safe and quality environment

Focus the team on service excellence and make interdepartmental connections necessary to ensure high quality service

Support managers in maintaining a positive working environment

Represent the department in clearing obstacles to high performance
