Manager of Broadcast Engineering and Technology

This position is responsible for the management, direction and coordination of all technical television broadcast operations activity in conjunction with the Production Team to ensure the seamless operation of our systems which are essential for the creation, distribution and transmission of our programs. The Manager of Broadcast Engineering and Technology will supervise all broadcast engineers, television technicians and part-time engineering staff.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

(including but not limited to):

Work closely with the Production team to ensure the design and integration of appropriate technologies and products to meet goals and objectives.

Work closely with the Production team to source and implement new technology for studio productions.

Execute projects in a timely, open, and service-oriented manner.

Manage vendor relationships, negotiate contracts.

Design and prepare all electronic diagrams and specifications for studio, control, transmitter, translator microwave and satellite equipment and systems.

Institute maintenance standards for all television productions, transmission, microwave and satellite earth station equipment. Monitor system performance to proactively identify potential issues and address them accordingly.

Coordinate and plan the installation, maintenance, and operation of broadcast television equipment, IP file transcoding/encoding systems and facilities.

Assist viewers in the selection, installation and operation of reception and distribution equipment.

Work collaboratively and maintain a close liaison with Programming and Production departments to provide high-quality technical assistance for all programming.

Understand and adhere to all federal and state regulations as they relate to the technical specifications or general operations.

IP Networking - Establish, configure, and maintain IP-based information systems and networks. Resolve network problems. IP address auditing. Maximize performance by troubleshooting network problems and outages and schedule upgrades. Collaborate with network architects. Coordinate network security by establishing and enforcing policies and access.

Hire, coach, mentor and supervise staff; manage performance and take corrective action as necessary; provide appropriate opportunities to develop skills and knowledge.

May recommend new technology and/or upgrades.

Manage department budget and resources.

Manage facility-related construction projects as related to television engineering and technology.

Education and Experience:

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field or equivalent experience required.

Minimum 5-7 years in an engineering/technical role in television broadcasting with specific experience as a broadcast engineer.

Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience; supervising bargaining unit employees preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:

Knowledge of State/Federal broadcasting laws.

Excellent organization and time management skills, with the ability to quickly assess situations and reprioritize work and schedules accordingly.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Work environment is normally broadcast production studios.

Able to sit at a work station, concentrate viewing computer screens for an extended period of time.

High utilization of television production equipment.

Must be able to lift 35 pounds regularly, sit and/or stand for long periods of time, bend and work in somewhat confined spaces.

Occasional exposure to the outside environment.

Able to travel locally.

Some work on weekends and evenings required.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technical manager who will play a critical role in maintaining an innovative television broadcast operation. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salary range is $85K-$100K annually.
