Job Description:

Budget Title: Instructional Support Specialist (SL-4)

Salary: Commensurate with experience (10-month, college-year)

Binghamton University is searching for a Technical Director who manages all aspects of the Theatre Department's scene shop(s) for the production program. The position works with the creative and technical faculty and staff to bring scenic and visual effects of production to stage. They are responsible for having technical drawings created for the scene shop, determining production expenses of projects, overseeing the scenic and props show budgets, coordinating with the production calendar as related to shop and onstage production activities, purchasing materials, supervising the building, installation and removal of scenery in day-to-day operations of the shop, overseeing the work of the scenic and props crews, establishing and enforcing safety rules and maintaining the shop's equipment and supplies. Duties:

Scenery Execution: Manage all aspects of the Theatre Department's scene shop(s) for the production program within established deadlines.Tech Rehearsals and Strike: Design and oversee scene shift transitions and Strike (in collaboration with director, designer, and stage management) as well as other run crew needs (to include scheduling and training).Safety: Develop and enforce safety guidelines for mainstage productions, equipment, and staff. Work with other relevant university departments and employees to this end.Budget: Generate budget estimates, implement accounting systems, maintain budgets and inventories.Collaboration: Work with directors and designers to review and modify designs as needed to maintain artistic integrity while fitting within safety standards, department budget, labor constraints, and student learning outcomes.Communication: Produce written documentation and correspondence, including generation of forms, calendars, and schedules for practicum class and student run crews.Oversight of support staff: Assistant Technical Directors, Property Master, and Scenic Artist.Teaching and Advising: Instruct and supervise people creating scenery in practicum lab classes, including students, graduate assistants, and other staff. Advise students on scenery for departmental studio productions.Meetings: Hold weekly production area meetings and attend relevant committee meetings.Execute the duties with a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree5 or more years of experience in a professional and/or academic Scene Shop managing the physical aspects of a theatrical production, ensuring show builds are on time and in budgetAbility to design and oversee technical solutions for scenic elements and rigging within industry safety standardsBroad knowledge of areas of theatrical production, including scenic, props, lighting, projection, audio, costume, and stage management practicesKnowledge and implementation of safety guidelines for theatrical productions, equipment, and employeesValid driver's license to operate a vehicle in New York StateBe able to have a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings as necessaryPreferred:

Experience teaching courses in technical theater at a college or university levelExperience teaching and mentoring graduate level projects and production workVisa sponsorship is not available for this position
