JOB PURPOSE:

Developing and securing philanthropic support from institutional donors is vital to the University and the mission of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR). The Grant Writer prepares proposals and grant applications, and reports, completing professional and administrative tasks in researching, identifying, developing, and responding to public and private grant opportunities in areas that support Howard University programs.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

This position will identify, define, and develop funding sources to support existing and planned program activities as well as lead the development, writing, and submission of grant proposals and reports. The Grant Writer may work directly with administrators, facility, and staff of the University at large in developing robust proposals and to report on the impact of secured funding.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

The position generates revenues that align with university priorities through timely submission of well-researched, well-written and well-documented grant proposals and reports. To achieve annual revenue targets, the Grant Writer will research and identify corporate, foundation and private funding prospects and generate high-quality proposals, narratives, applications and supporting documents in response to solicitations consistent with all university policies and procedures, and the requirements and guidelines of the funding institutions.

The Grant Writer maintains primary responsibility for grant schedules and tracking grants; coordinates and follows-up on the progress of submitted proposals; and may meet regularly with faculty/staff to discuss current and new funding needs. The Grant Writer also researches, collects data and drafts reports required of secured funding.

CORE COMPETENCIES:

Proven track record of securing new funding and delivering excellent impact reports;High level of proficiency writing, conducting research, sourcing and identifying funding opportunities for restricted and unrestricted support;Familiarity with the creation of expenditure and income budgets to accompany proposals; and ability to answer, or find answers to, questions regarding the allowability of proposed expenditures related to all specific grants;Ability to implement systems and follow-up processes in a highly organized manner, particularly as related to grant tracking;Ability to work collaboratively across campus and independently with purpose and accuracy in a fast-paced environment; andAbility to exercise sound judgment and a high degree of discretion.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree requiredThree (3) years of grant writing experience, preferably with an education focusExcellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Word, Access, PowerPoint and Excel), and database management skills; Raiser's Edge knowledge preferredExcellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills

Expected Pay Range: 68,181 - 75,000
