Overview

The Portola Hotel & Spa Marketing Internship Program provides an opportunity for students interested in marketing, public relations, or communications to earn their Bachelor’s degree while graduating with up to 12 weeks of work experience. The program is intended to introduce students to marketing professional services in the hospitality industry which is often not covered in the classroom. This internship will provide an overview of how hotels like Portola Hotel & Spa market to new, current and past guests, while working with an established marketing team.

Program Description

The hospitality marketing internship program provides an opportunity to develop marketing skills and explore the hospitality industry. This opportunity is an entry level internship position with hands-on experience working within the marketing department for a hotel with on-site dining and conference space. The focus of this internship is to develop existing knowledge and provide an introduction to social media and online reputation management.

The length of this summer internship program is 12 weeks. The internship is designed to provide the tools necessary to grow your marketing knowledge in the hospitality industry and develop the skills essential to become an effective hotel marketer. The program includes, hands-on training working with hotel website content management system, blogging, branding, social media, online reputation management, and support with content creation. The ideal candidate must display positive energy and enthusiasm, collaborate well with a team, communicate effectively, and meet deadlines.

Program Requirements

Must be currently enrolled in a 2- or 4-year accredited program with a declared major in marketing, advertising, business, communications, public relations, graphic design, or hospitality.

Must have completed at least one year of higher education prior to start of internship.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Comfortable with collaboration, constructive criticism, and interacting with internal team members.

Maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Complete application and provide three references.

Commit to working part-time as a paid intern for 12 weeks over the summer months at the hotel in Monterey, CA.

Be part of a cohesive team with a singular focus on creating the best possible guest experience.

Desired Skills

Ability to quickly gain a working knowledge of division operations, as well as Portola Hotel & Spa’s cultural and core values, policies, and standard operating procedures. This working knowledge is generally learned on-the-job.

Mentor/Supervisor

You will be assigned a mentor to serve as a point of contact throughout the internship. You will meet with your mentor on a regular basis to answer questions and provide a framework for how your work ties into the bigger picture at Portola Hotel & Spa.

Evaluation Procedures

You will receive weekly feedback from your supervisors and will have a formal evaluation at the end of the internship with your supervisor and/or mentor. A key part of the Portola Hotel & Spa culture is providing real-time and honest feedback so we can effectively work together.
