This position is based in San Francisco, California. Staff are currently expected to work from the Academy offices at least 2-3 times per week, which may fluctuate based on business needs. Please do not apply if you are not able to work onsite. This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by Cal Academy Workers United. Once the Academy has a Collective Bargaining Agreement with Cal Academy Workers United this position will be subject to the terms and conditions of that contract. About the Creative Studio Team:

Creative Studio is the in-house design department of the Academy, deeply involved in projects inside the museum and beyond its walls. Composed of multidisciplinary designers, photographers, and a studio manager, this team is responsible for developing engaging and educational environments, and crafting communications that people respond to and delight in.

Key Responsibilities:Design and production . Create, redesign, revise, or assist in the design and production of Academy graphics and digital assets, including:

Web Projects : Work on web modules, page designs, and graphics created for the calacademy.org website, ticketing platform, Academy microsites, and BigPicture.org.Digital Assets:

Graphics email, social media, presentations, streaming platforms, and other screen-based formats-e.g. web banners, email headers, online promotions, social media graphics and gifs, information graphics, wordmarks, and iconsDigital Signage : UI and design for non-exhibit museum signage such as wayfinding and information signage (mobile and installed screens) collaborating on UX, UI, & presentationsDigital Exhibit projects : UI and iconography for exhibit interactives (mobile and installed screens) collaborating on UX, UI, & presentationsDesign Process:

Carry ideas through design cycles to define visual, UI and UX design through mockups, wireframes, interaction flows, and prototypes. Understand how and where to use findings from metrics and user research data to inform design. Ability to quickly grasp and distill complex user design issues into clean, understandable solutions. Skilled at providing constructive feedback and managing expectations while working with internal and external partners

Imagery : Create and revise graphics for implementation in formats such as

Illustration : Create new work and/or modify existing Academy illustrations and iconography for use in digital and interactive projects.Photo preparation : Source and modify images in the Academy's image libraries and other online resources.

Qualifications:

A successful candidate will have the following:Project Portfolio:A strong portfolio that demonstrates modern design and thoughtful, and innovative problem-solving with a diverse set of technologies is required. Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in Human-Computer Interaction Design, Web Design, Graphic Design, or related fieldMinimum three years of interactive design experienceKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Branding, design, and typography : Excellent typography and visual design skills. Follow identity and style guidelines, set type beautifully, and apply a refined modern design aesthetic to all work with special attention to digital implementations.Design & prototyping platforms : Proficiently use Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, Illustrator, and Figma. Preferred: basic experience with CSS/HTML5, JavaScript, responsive design, illustration/iconography creation, video editing and animationUser Experience/User Interface

Excellent UX, UI, digitally-oriented visual design skills and understanding of user-centered principles. Apply best practices in digital production techniques & experience working with developers. Ensure consistency of the digital implementation of the brand and guidelines with a high level of usability across websites and on-floor screen-based experiences.Collaboration : Work as part of a team, take direction, ask questions, be responsive and respectful, and seek help when needed.Communication : Communicate clearly with coworkers, internal and external partners, and museum guests from different backgrounds, identities, and experiences. Be able to present ideas effectively to less tech-savvy partners.Interpersonal : Take initiative, work efficiently, and communicate appropriately. Work directly with a cross-functional team that includes project managers, developers, user researchers, other designers, and content teams.Organization : Be organized and responsible and work on multiple projects at once in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Proficient in project management techniques and software.Office apps : Work well within Asana, Google, and Microsoft apps. Also comfortable communicating via Slack and email.Mission-alignment : Have a passion for nature, science, and the future of life on our planet.Physical Environment: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. Compensation and Benefits:The hourly range for this position is $36.06 - $40.87. Actual compensation will be commensurate with experience, skills/knowledge set, and internal equity. We believe in fair and equitable compensation practices and are committed to providing competitive salaries within the industry and market standards. The Academy offers a total compensation package that emphasizes both base salary and comprehensive benefits based on the hours per week worked.
