Since 1968, Brooklyn A has provided free legal services for low-income residents of Brooklyn, pursuing neighborhood-based mission of justice, empowerment and community development. For over half a century, we have utilized an array of legal and advocacy strategies-community organizing, affirmative civil rights litigation, and eviction defense to defend the rights of individuals and families. Collaboration with the city, state, and federal officials to enforce housing laws and develop legislative solutions is also an integral part of our strategy. Brooklyn A has three core programs-Preserving Affordable Housing (PAH) Program, Consumer & Economic Advocacy (CEA) Program, and Community & Economic Development (CED) Program-each of which has unique initiatives and plays a vital community role to ensure basic needs are met and fundamental rights affirmed.

The Grants and Development Coordinator will build capacity for Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation A and its Development & Communications team through grant writing and reporting, researching foundations to find new grant opportunities, and collecting data and stories from internal stakeholders to support our development and communications work. They will largely focus on private philanthropy.

Primary Focus

Research funding opportunities and identify those that are potentially a good fit for supporting BKA's programs and strategic growth;Lead the preparation and development of foundation and corporate grant proposals, including all external and internal outreach and planning required and the drafting of the narrative, budget, and accompanying materials;Manage all deadlines and workflows for LOIs, grant applications, and reports including internal deadlines for collection of information from other staff, ensuring on-time submission and high rate of successful funding requests;Coordinate the submission of grant reports;Partner with program directors and senior management team to learn about emerging needs and be able to translate into a strong written narrative;Maintain relationship management system that increases capacity to attract, develop, and maintain meaningful relationships with grant partners and private funders and foundations;Support the organization's individual fundraising efforts by preparing materials and assisting in identifying and tracking prospects;Write and prepare fundraising materials such as concept papers, information packets, and brochures; andOther duties as assigned.Education, Skills & Experience

Minimum of 4-6 years of successful grant writing in non-profit organizations;Successful track record in grant cultivation and in stewarding grant proposals through the entire grant application and submittal process;Passion for storytelling, with the ability to transform technical and legal issues into broadly engaging, emotionally rooted, and informative narratives;Demonstrated ability to manage a portfolio of funders and achieve financial results;Knowledge of foundation and corporate giving is preferred;Ability to work with executive leadership, program staff, and finance to conceptualize and develop compelling, logical, and clear grant proposals, supporting materials and reports;Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office software with an emphasis on Excel, Word, and Outlook and working with fundraising databases;Strong time management and organizational skills with demonstrated ability to meet firm deadlines;Strong reporting and recordkeeping skills, including the ability to synthesize lots of quantifiable and qualitative data into clear, plain language and readable charts andStrong project management skills;Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds, local organizations and people in crisis;Demonstrated ability to interact with people of different races, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations in a multicultural environment and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion; andThorough commitment to Brooklyn A's mission.

Compensation & Benefits

Annual salary $70,000-80,000, dependent on years of experience. Benefits highlights - employer paid health insurance; 27 days annual vacation, employer contribution to 401(k); and paid parental leave.
