JOB SUMMARY

Thisposition provides the first line of public service for library patrons, andensures that libraries are open at appropriate times. In addition to providing students andresearchers with access to the physical libraries, the Access Services Assistantconnects patrons with appropriate sources, services, spaces, interfaces, orstaff members to meet their research needs.

MAJOR DUTIES

Answers telephone and greets patrons. Provides directional information and assistance.Provides basic assistance to patrons using library technology and equipment.Supervises and helps train student assistants in Access Services functions including checking materials in and out, updating patron records, and re-shelving library materials.Performs tasks such as checking materials in and out, updating patron records, receiving library fines and fees, and re-shelving library materials.Helps prepare the library for opening and closing.Processes incoming and outgoing Inter-library Loan requests.Assists university faculty with course reserve requests, including the resolution of copyright issues.Refers patrons with complex informational needs to appropriate Research and Instructional Services librarians.Contacts campus police to deal with disruptive or problem patrons.Participates in collection shifting.Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGEREQUIRED BY THE POSITION

Approachability and knowledge of library sources and services.Excellent one-on-one teaching skills and knowledge of the latest library interfaces.Knowledge of circulation processes and basic knowledge of the library's classification systems. Requires supervisory skills.Knowledge of circulation processes and basic knowledge of the library's classification systems.Diplomatic assertiveness in dealing with patrons who may be eager to enter or reluctant to leave. Requires observations skills to ensure everything is prepared and secure.Knowledge of technical Inter-library Loan interfaces and occasional diplomacy skills in maintaining relationships with partner institutions.Current knowledge of best copyright practices (which are continually changing) and tactful communication skills.Strong interviewing skills and a basic understanding of disciplinary distinctions in higher education.Good observations skills and decisiveness.Basic understanding of library's classification systems.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat generalinstructions; many aspects of the work are covered specifically, but theemployee must use some judgment. The supervisor spot-checks work as it is beingdone for compliance with procedures and patron satisfaction.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include department and university policies andprocedures, including circulation, reserve, and inter-library loan policies. Inaddition, this position must utilize building opening, closing and securityprocedures. These guidelines aregenerally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation inapplication.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

The work consists of related administrative and client services duties. The need for tactful communication and occasional conflicts between patron satisfaction and the need to provide effective stewardship of library resources may contribute to the complexity of the position.

The purpose of this position is to provide effective access services to students, faculty and other library clients.Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of those operations.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, students, faculty, and members of the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORKENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed while standing or walking, and while intermittently sitting at a desk, standing, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects and occasionally lifts moderately heavy objects.

The work is typically performed indoors in a library setting.Work may expose the employee to dust.

SUPERVISORYAND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

Thisposition has direct supervision over assigned student personnel.

MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of a high school diploma.

Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years of experience or service.Experience with public service and/or prior library experience is beneficial but not necessary. Training is provided by the Access Services Librarian, with input from Research and Instructional Services librarians.Previous experience as a part time student assistant is common; individuals without this experience would require additional training.

Somecollege coursework is preferred.
