Classroom Teacher Job Description

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

The classroom teacher:Administers and develops subject specific assessments for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plansAdvises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations, student's achievements, developing methods for improvement. and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environmentAssesses student progress towards standards, expectations, and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administrationCollaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement planCounsels students for the purpose of improving performance, health status, problem solving techniques and a variety of personal issuesDemonstrates and differentiates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual student requirementsInstructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of studyManages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environmentMonitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, school grounds, hallways, restrooms, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environmentParticipates in a variety of meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functionsPrepares a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, lesson plans following scope and sequence, correspondence with parents and students, examinations and quizzes, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirementsReports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, zero tolerance offenses etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to state law and board policiesResponds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolutionParticipates in a variety of meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functionsPrepares a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, lesson plans following scope and sequence, correspondence with parents and students, examinations and quizzes, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirementsReports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, zero tolerance offenses etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to state law and board policiesResponds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolutionDirects teacher assistants, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual studentsPerforms other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unitSupports other classroom teachers for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plansDemonstrates and models on a regular basis the integration of technology in all curriculum areasFollows a plan for professional technology development and actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionallyPerforms other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Requires a Bachelor's degree and endorsement in the grade/subject taught with a valid Tennessee certificateMust be highly qualifiedGoverned by the Rules and Regulations of the Tennessee Code Annotated and the Tennessee Board of EducationMust be physically and mentally able to perform the responsibilities and duties of the position

Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data. Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.

Requires the ability to provide guidance, effective supervision, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization : Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude:

Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude:

Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning:

Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems, philosophies, laws, regulations, and procedures; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning:

Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria and the goals and priorities of planning and development programs.
