Position Summary

Coordinate all operational functions of The Writing Center.

The College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences (CHASS) at the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) invites applications for Director of the Writing Center, a full-time staff position focused on advancing student academic success. We seek candidates committed to collaborating with faculty and staff from across the University to cultivate a supportive environment for students matched by innovative approaches to meeting their needs and those of their faculty. The Director of The Writing Center will join CHASS at a time of exciting change as we embrace our new name, vision, mission, and strategic plan. The Director of The Writing Center will join a community committed to a student-centered experience that extends from the classroom to academic advising and support services. The Writing Center, while located in CHASS, serves the entire University community.

The Director will report directly to the Dean, joining an energetic staff in CHASS. The Director will lead a team of ten staff and student consultants who hold approximately 2500 appointments each academic year in our well-established and highly recognized Writing Center. The Director will be a student-centered, collegial individual who values strong relationships, exhibits clear verbal and written communication skills, and demonstrates an ability to manage all facets of The Writing Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Director include:

* Managing the daily operations of The Writing Center, including staffing and scheduling.* Supervising, training, and mentoring student consultants and part-time employees.* Ensuring professional standards for facilitating student services, including scheduling and modifying student appointments, and managing The Writing Center's technological and website needs.* Engaging in campus outreach to promote The Writing Center's services and to develop partnerships.* Creating resources for The Writing Center and the University community.* Providing class visits and topical workshops for faculty, staff, and students.* Maintaining and evaluating the annual budget for The Writing Center.* Facilitating assessment, reporting, and program development.* Engaging with Writing Center Studies scholarship.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

* Three or more years of direct experience in Writing Centers, with a focus on administration, including managing student support programs, projects, or similar roles in K-12 and/or higher education* A master's degree or professional certificate from an accredited higher education institution* An understanding of writing and writing center theory and practice* The ability to manage complex scheduling and staffing demands* The ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and student consultants* Effective interpersonal communication skills that enable impactful engagement with students, staff, and faculty* A professional track record that reflects successful support for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience in establishing and maintaining standards for student services* Experience in delivering professional development opportunities to students, staff, and faculty* Experience in developing and revising policies and procedures for employees

Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).

Work Environment

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.

Salary/Pay Information

Commensurate with experience

Anticipated Schedule

Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm
