NATURE OF WORK

In North Carolina, the school's library media coordinator may be identified by a variety of titles, such as librarian, library teacher, or media specialist. The official title for certification purposes is school library media coordinator, and this position is considered a teaching certification. This individual provides the leadership and instructional resources and services for implementation of a school library media program that serves as an integral part of a student-centered educational process.

Planning and Implementing for Program Administration

Works with school staff to design and implement short- and long-range plans to ensure balance among teaching, instructional technology, collaboration, collection development, and program management.Evaluates the school library media program on a continual basis according to accepted standards of qualityOrganizes school library media facilities and resources in a manner that supports the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and maximizes intellectual and physical access to resources.Leads in the budgetary process of the school through the Media and Technology Advisory Committee to ensure equity of access to instructional materialsLeads the Media and Technology Advisory Committee in effective decision making to promote the school library media programInteracts effectively with students, staff, administration, and the general public to promote and expand the school library media programDemonstrates professional integrity through ethical behaviorPrepares and submits accurate reports as requiredCarries out assigned non-instructional duties and adheres to established laws, policies, rules, and regulations

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

SUGGESTED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

CERTIFICATION:

Approved program requirements that must be met to qualify for K-12 School Library Media Coordinator certification are at the master's degree level and were adopted by the State Board of Education in 1987.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Generally, the job requires sitting, walking, and standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Job-related experience is required.

Certificates & Licenses

Must have a Master's or foreign equivalent degree. Must have or be qualified to hold a NC teaching license in School Media Coordinator (K-12).
