The Baltimore Banner is hiring a reporter to cover Baltimore City government and politics.

This reporter would be responsible for covering the mayor, City Council and city agencies, always with an emphasis on how and why what's happening matters to residents of Baltimore and beyond. The reporter must be able to mix breaking, spot news, analysis and longer-term investigative and enterprise stories that hold people in power accountable for their decisions. The ideal candidate is a mid-career reporter with a proven ability to own a beat and develop sources.

City government and politics coverage is central to The Banner's mission and audience and this reporter would be expected to set the standard for others within our newsroom.Responsibilities:Write the news of the day quickly, with accuracy, context and sweepHave a keen eye for the stories that make Baltimore politics unique and interestingCultivate a diverse and deep source network to inform story selectionBe immersed in the political currents - issues, personalities, exigencies - that shape Baltimore.Constantly push to close the gap between what's known and what can be reported to our audienceBe flexible and creative, choosing forms best suited for each storyUse and understand newsroom analytics to hone and identify coverage that serves readersCollaborate with reporters across the newsroomWork across social media platforms to tailor content to connect with readersRepresent The Banner in the community as needed - in person or on television or radio appearancesRequirements:A minimum of 5 years of experience in journalismAbility to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environmentStrong writing skills and ability to quickly make complex topics understandableA strong instinct for newsDigital savvy and a familiarity with audience analyticsEnthusiasm for news and content that will resonate with readersTeamwork and willingness to collaborate with othersStrong interpersonal skills and an ability to give and receive constructive feedbackWillingness to work some nights and weekends as news dictatesA commitment to upholding journalistic values and ethics
