Position Overview

Salary Range:

$15.9959 - $17.6418/hour. Salary reflects Step 1 and Step 3 of a 7-step pay scale. Salary at hiring will be dependent upon the applicant's education, experience, and training.

Work Schedule:

Position #1: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday - 8:15 a.m. - 5:15 p.m., Wednesday - 11:15 a.m. - 8:15 p.m., with an occasional Friday night. Position #2: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday - 8:15 a.m. - 5:15 p.m., Tuesday - 11:15 a.m. - 8:15 p.m., with an occasional Friday night.

Position #3: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday - 8:15 a.m. - 5:15 p.m., Thursday - 11:15 a.m. - 8:15 p.m., with an occasional Friday night.

Job Summary:

The Library Services Specialist II provides mid-level administrative support to the department or function manager and other department or function staff. Duties include performing or coordinating activities in support of the department or function. Specific duties vary with the department or function assigned. Duties may include combinations of circulation services, children's services activities and programs as well as reference services support. Incumbents typically are proficient with computer applications for word processing and spreadsheets. Other skills typically include use of audiovisual equipment and the internet.

Scope of Responsibility:

Incumbents have a moderate degree of understanding of department or functional operations and are able to work with initiative. Under management guidance the incumbent will consider various objectives and make non-routine choices within an established precedent. Incumbents must have the ability to make judgments based on their analysis of the situation within prescribed procedures. Work product has a limited impact on departmental operations and to a lesser extent the operation of the City. Incumbents must have the ability to exercise discretion regarding confidential matters and provide detailed procedural explanations or technical information.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Library OperationsPerform a variety of circulation duties including checking materials in, registering and updating patron records, sorting materials.

Renewing Library materials for patrons on the telephone, computing and collecting fines, balancing the cash drawer and ensuring that patron files are accurately maintained; assist in the preparation of fine notices and overdue notices; investigate location of lost or withheld materials. Sort, shelve, rearrange and otherwise maintain Library materials; sort carts, empty book drop; maintain order of and shift materials on shelves; assist in routing Library materials to the appropriate area including mending, technical processing, hold, and interlibrary loan sorting areas, clean and maintain audiovisual materials as needed. Perform a variety of miscellaneous clerical duties including preparing, stamping, and distributing mail.

Assist in the preparation of materials for children's story times and other programs. Assist in shelving children's materials in assigned areas.

Maintain special displays of high interest reading materials for children and their parents. Assist in development and oversight of children's craft programs.

Patron ServicesProvide general information services to Library patrons within the scope of responsibility; assist patrons in locating and using Library materials, equipment and services; perform basic computer searches. Enhance customer experiences of the Library through positive customer interactions and value-added services. Answer telephones, renewing materials, reserving rooms and answering queries within scope of responsibility. Transfer and refer calls to other staff as needed. Assist in providing information services to children, teens, and adults within scope of responsibility. Assist in providing tours of the Library and its facilities. Deliver occasional story times and baby story times under direction of Children's Librarian. Provide information at the Help Desk to patrons for directional questions, locating materials and assisting with the use of Library equipment and technology. Refer higher-level inquiries to Librarians for in-depth answers.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications & Skills:High school diploma or GED Two (2) or more years of combined education and experience, or equivalent Strong interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

Experience with city government and knowledge of department or function operations

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Requires moderate physical effort, lifting between 5 and 25 pounds and the ability to push up to 200 pounds, where effort is occasional, between 15% and 45% of the time. Requires high attention to detail or deadlines continuously (over 70% of the time). Work requires exposure to one disagreeable element present (exterior temperatures), on an occasional basis (between 15% and 45% of the time). Limited driving may be required.
