The Institute for Arts and Health (IAH) at the University of Memphis engages teams of artists and creatives, scientists, and community stakeholders in transdisciplinary research and intervention to improve individual, family, community, and population health. The IAH takes a broad view of health and seeks to improve both prevention and outcomes in physical, cognitive, affective, and mental and behavioral health. These goals are achieved through research in complementary and integrative health, neuroarts, creative and expressive arts therapies, arts in community health, and the medical humanities. The core value of the IAH is to improve whole person health and quality of life for those presently underserved and disproportionately burdened by disease risk and illness.

Music Therapy Postdoctoral Fellowship will provide training for a highly-qualified credentialed music therapist with a Ph.D. The 3-year fellowship has two key goals:

1. Provide intensive research training in music therapy and one of the following the topic areas: pain, addiction, or adult cancer care.

2. Provide mentorship for a music therapy researcher to become an independent academic researcher.

The fellowship will offer a unique experience for developing a personal research program, including a framework and methods needed to implement clinical research. The mentorship will occur within the multidisciplinary expertise of the Institute for Arts and Health. The primary mentor will be Dr. Debra Burns, PhD, MT-BC (Dean, College of Communication and Fine Arts). The fellow will be able to identify additional mentors based on specific interests and educational needs. The fellow will meet with their mentors monthly to discuss their research and development.

Minimum Position Qualifications

Doctorate (e.g. PhD) and be credentialed as music therapist.

Applicants must have a doctorate (e.g. PhD) and be a credentialed music therapist. All terminal degrees must be awarded and visible on transcripts by 10/1/24.

The postdoctoral fellowship will provide training for a highly-qualified credentialed music therapist with a Ph.D.

The fellow will be expected to author or co-author at least two manuscripts, learn about grant writing and submit at least one research grant and be prepared to apply for positions in academic or health system settings to accomplish high-impact music therapy research after completing their fellowship training. The fellow also will be expected to present at conferences and other professional network events to share findings and foster dialog.
