Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Develop and maintain a wide spectrum of library services to meet the information needs of Sparrow Health System's staff involved in patient care, teaching, administration and research. Plan, organize, manage, direct and supervise all aspects of the medical library services including: budget and expense control, main library holdings and circulation, and audio visual services. Advise and assist the affiliated hospital libraries. Maintain various electronic library databases, including bibliographic searches. Provide end-user training, interlibrary loans, and library web page content as necessary.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

* Effectively manage the library resources to ensure clinicians are able to obtain relevant information in a timely manner.* Develop automated library systems, in cooperation with the Information Services Division, which will encourage the practice of evidence-based medicine, expansion of clinical research, and service the information needs of physicians, nurses, other clinicians, managers and students.* Ensure the library meets the standards of all regulatory agencies including JCAHO, ACGME, and AOA.* Recruit, select, train/orient and assign department staff and volunteers. Develop standards of performance, evaluate performance, and initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions.* Monitor and implement library operating, personnel, capital and new program budgets and ensures that department operates within budget.* Establish contact with selected local, state, regional and national library networks to insure optimum resource sharing (physical and virtual) and joint library collection development.* Develop and provide instructional and consultative programs for SHS staff in the use of advanced information technology in their daily work.* Establish an active working relationship with all SHS affiliated libraries to share resources and reduce expenditures system-wide.* In cooperation with Sparrow Department of Information Services, direct provision of information services to all SHS locations, and design information programs to enhance services to remote locations through evaluation and application of computer and other electronic technology.* Evaluate information requirements of patient, community and health care providers who educate patients. Provide educational tools for the various clients consistent with the Health System Mission and resources available.* Develop and implement short and long range space plans to insure that SHS is able to meet the needs of the academic, management and clinical clients with special attention to the needs of students, house officers and expanded research activity.* Plan, budget, manage and schedule audio visual equipment resources to serve the education and meeting needs of the Health System.* Adheres to established best practices (i.e. Rounding, Thank You Notes, AIDET, etc.).* Demonstrates commitment to safety by establishing an environment in which safety issues are promptly reported and appropriate actions are taken.

Job Requirements

General Requirements • Certification from the Medical Library Association Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) Work Experience • Minimum of five years experience in libraries, at least two of which are in library management. Education • Master's degree in library science or information services from an ALA (American Libraries Association) accredited library school. Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Preferred-Health Care experience.
