Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Equivalent Experience:

Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus seven (7) years of relevant work experience, including two (2) years of experience in an electric utility distribution power designer capacity.

Education from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for experience up to four (4) years for the minimum qualifications.

Notes to Applicants

Under limited supervision, this person will serve as the team lead and distribution design subject matter expert for Austin Energy’s Pole Attachments design group. This person will plan, assign, schedule, organize, and monitor the work assigned to the distribution design group, will review and approve design projects produced by the group, and will provide mentoring, training, and guidance to the design group members. This person will also perform electrical load, equipment sizing, and voltage drop calculations, will assess project requirements, perform cost estimates, plan for materials, and maintain active communications with all relevant parties from project inception to completion. This person will also work on special projects as needed.

WORK SCHEDULE :

This position has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a City-designated emergency, Essential Employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees and ensure the continuity of essential operations. In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained onsite to assist with operations and recovery.

Work hours may include after hours, holidays, and weekends

Shifts may change according to departmental needs.

Employee may be required to work additional hours outside of regular work schedule.

TRAVEL :

Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and the National Electric Safety Code requirements relevant to distribution design issues/distribution design techniques.

Knowledge of high school-level math (algebra, geometry, and trigonometry), physics, etc. relevant to electric utility distribution design.

Knowledge of distribution design and construction practices, including Austin Energy (AE) Distribution Designer Guidelines and Distribution Construction Standards.

Knowledge of utility service guidelines and policies.

Knowledge of power system components, functions, ratings, and limitations.

Knowledge of roadway, security, and other lighting design practices.

Ability to use AutoCAD or equivalent computer-assisted tools.

Ability to use word processing and spreadsheet applications.

Ability to perform advanced power system calculations.

Ability to analyze power distribution systems and components.

Ability to travel to more than one work location

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

Assesses load requirements, evaluates environmental constraints, and identifies project requirements (permits, easements, aesthetics, fees, etc.)

Performs cost estimates, plans material needs, and follows up on progress of distribution projects from inception to completion.

Performs complex power system calculations: voltage drop, equipment sizing, etc.

Interprets survey data, plan, and deed information. Interprets engineered construction drawings.

Interfaces regularly with contractors, engineers, developers, customers, and consultants.

Develops master system plans for future growth in large developments.

Serves as project leader and coordinates the efforts of various utility sections in the design and construction of large developments.
