Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Responsible for all commercial activities, including developing and implementing marketing and pricing strategies which maximize profitability, as well as, revenue and market share growth. This involves direct sales of NS' transportation services to major coal customers, working with assigned Marketing team members to maintain and increase business levels with their assigned customer accounts.

Principal Duties:

Develops, implements, and communicates Coal Business Group's marketing objectives and pricing strategies to Marketing team members.

Works with managers to develop marketing plans and to sell NS' transportation services to assigned customers which maintain and increase business levels for NS while maximizing profitability and improving CBG's asset utilization.

Reviews managers' commercial work including any market/cost analysis of customer rate requests and associated rate proposals; relevant presentations and transportation contracts. As part of this process, provide coaching and feedback to improve managers' commercial work.

Manages Marketing teams' input of customer forecast information both timely and accurately into NS' Delphi forecasting system. Insure that this forecast information is consistent with current market issues and historical consumption levels.

Assists managers in the direct sales and negotiation of any customer rate proposals or offers with customers, especially with large, complex, and long term transportation contracts.

Assists in the development of Marketing team members to promote strong customer relationships; increase their knowledge of the coal industry; gain a thorough understanding of NS' coal transportation network and the assigned customers' industry; and gain a solid understanding of transportation tariffs and contracts; and develop strong negotiating skills.

Insures Marketing team members follow corporate guidelines and procedures, including but not limited to safety, contract compliance, records retention, and corporate governance.
