Position Summary

The Circulation Assistant is a highly visible clerical and customer service position. Circulation Assistants work at the front desk when not conducting regular library maintenance projects and are the first point of contact for all visitors to the library.

Required QualificationsSome availability during opening hours, closing hours, and/or weekends is required for this position.Must be able to communicate verbally and provide customer service in a courteous and professional manner.Ability to work well with others and independently when required.Must be detail-oriented with ability to multi-task.Knowledge of common software applications such as Microsoft Office is preferred.Ability to push a loaded book truck and lift up to thirty pounds.Fluent in FERPA regulations and trustworthy with confidential information.

Primary Responsibilities

Provide assistance with basic catalog searching, study room reservations, and other library services.Opening and/or closing duties.Answering and transferring phone calls.Use specialized library software for the check out, check in, and renewal of library materials.Process new materials for the library collection.Assist patrons with copier/scanner and microfiche/film questions; refill printers with paper.Record hourly building use statistics.Shelve books and search for materials in the collection.Assist with inventory, shifting, weeding, and other collection maintenance projects.On campus interlibrary loan deliveries and library mail sorting.Use a cash register to collect payments (fines, book sale, etc.)Regularly check the Library Canvas page for policy, schedule and other work-related updates.Perform other duties as assigned.

Learning OutcomesCirculation Assistants will be able to collaborate with coworkers on daily tasks and projects.Circulation Assistants will service a diverse population at the front desk and respect the values, experiences, worldview, and intersectional identities of customers.Circulation Assistants will be able to explain Library policies in a helpful and respectful manner to patrons with questions.Circulation Assistants will provide patrons assistance with technology, such as catalog searching, online reservations, printers, scanners, and more.
