Public Safety Reporter needed in Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Pilot & Today seeks a reporter who can dig into the public safety beats in Routt and Moffat counties as well as handle general assignment stories. Responsibilities will include writing no less than five well-sourced, bylined articles each week as well as producing shorter staff reports and briefs. We will expect you to ensure accuracy, fairness and correct spelling and grammar in all your reporting duties. The job will also include some photography and crafting website and social media posts at the direction of the publisher and editor. The public safety reporter will cover courts and crime in two adjacent counties in Northwest Colorado and be based out of our offices in Steamboat Springs. Steamboat is a storied city at the base of a world-class ski resort and nestled along the Western Slope of the Colorado Rockies with the Yampa River cutting through downtown. Steamboat sits at 6,700 feet elevation and features some of the best opportunities in North America for hiking, mountain biking, camping, kayaking, rafting, tubing, skiing and snowboarding. Qualified applicants will have a journalism degree, a degree in a similar field or applicable work experience. They also should have a deep knowledge of AP style; the availability to work some nights, weekends and holidays; a current driver’s license and transportation; and most importantly, a desire to perform quality community journalism. The schedule will typically be Tuesday to Saturday, though hours are flexible outside of scheduled public meetings and events.
