CPMG offers flexible, integrative solutions for Department of Defense (DoD) contractors, among others, and specializes in cybersecurity, information and operational technology, electronic security surveillance, and support services.Summary:This position serves in the Design & Production (D&P) department of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), Smithsonian Institution. The NPG is devoted to the acquisition, research, interpretation, care and display of portraits of people who have made significant contributions to American history and culture. The NPG explores the lives and achievements of historically significant Americans through its collections, exhibitions, publications and programs.The Visual Information Specialist (Graphics) participates in the design, production, installation and maintenance of a wide variety of museum exhibition graphic elements and building signage. The incumbent designs materials for print and creatively interprets and applies the NPG's graphic identity. The incumbent operates and helps maintains design and production equipment in support of the above duties. All duties are performed under the general supervision of the Head of Design and in collaboration with the other members of the D&P team.

ResponsibilitiesEssential Job Functions:Design and Drawing 75%

Works with other Design & Production staff to plan, organize and implement art production work for exhibition-related graphic elements. Designs graphic layouts for exhibit projects, building signage, and public program support materials, in collaboration with other design and production staff.Under the supervision of the Head of Design, generates scale drawings and presentations, selects and manipulates images, specifies typography, performs typesetting and copy layouts, determines production materials and methods, generates production-ready artwork. Projects include logos and title graphics, murals, text panels, labels, directional signage, exterior signs, banners, and printed materials such as posters and brochures.Gathers project information from supervisor and other project staff as a basis for planning design and production. Compiles conceptual information, cost estimates and schedules in line with stated goals and presents findings to key stakeholders. Improves production according to approved design, budgets, schedules. Ensures accuracy of output and timely project completion.Helps select best practices, materials and methods for production. Organizes, develops, and determines styles and materials compatible with design intent. Assesses effectiveness of production methods and adjusts them as necessary. Keeps informed of developments in the field of visual information, with a focus on graphic design styles and techniques utilized in museums.Uses graphic design computing equipment and industry standard computer software, such as Apple Macintosh computers and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) to produce designs from concept to production-ready artwork.Prints and produces exhibition graphic components. Uses graphic design production support equipment such as printers, plotters, laminators, vinyl cutters, hand tools and other tools and machinery.Coordinates with the Head of Design and other staff to generate design ideas and print-ready artwork for printed materials including brochures, booklets, leaflets, invitations, rack cards, and calendars. Generates page layouts, formats text, and selects, sizes and edits images.

Project Coordination and Communications 25%

Participates in procurement and production of new and reprinted offset printed material (brochures, fliers, posters, calendars of events, etc.) by vendors - including RFQ activities to preparation of final design, to press-checking. Maintains current knowledge of industry print processes, materials, standards and innovations.Discusses project priorities and developments with the Head of Design and reports on progress. Collaborates with curators, publications staff, educators, and other stakeholders in developing and reviewing project objectives, designs and schedules in order to coordinate efforts and ensure consistency with shared goals.Monitors and helps to maintain inventory of graphics-related supplies and materials. Anticipates upcoming project supply needs and replenishes stocks to avoid shortages.

Performs other duties as assigned in support of and in collaboration with fellow design and production staff members.

QualificationsNecessary Skills and Knowledge:Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of graphic design and visual communications as they relate to museum exhibition design and the visual arts.The ability to interpret subject matter, design and present graphic materials in a variety of media, plan and develop designs and concepts for presentation, coordinate production of exhibition and building graphics, and advise others on visual information practices.Skill in using industry standard graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) to edit images, typeset copy and design exhibit support graphics and printed materials.Knowledge of a wide variety of graphic production materials and processes used in exhibition graphics and print production, including computer graphic design, print production, vinyl and dimensional lettering production, graphics installation, offset and quick print lithography, paper stocks and binding.Knowledge of print page layout techniques, design concepts (balance, form, line emphasis, etc.), typography, image selection, and specification, typesetting, copy fitting.Skill in image processing, copy work, graphic preparations, photo mounting, trimming, laminating, and color matching/specification.Ability to plan, organize and implement art production work for graphic components of print graphic projects, including design and layout, copy fitting, type specifying, photo specifying from edited manuscripts, proofing and approvals.Ability to communicate orally and in writing with designers, curators, photographers, and editors in order to provide advice, present findings, persuade stakeholders on solutions, provide guidance to contractors, and coordinate work with other departments.Knowledge of inks and papers (including photographic paper) and of controls for high-quality production of offset printed material, production techniques and management from design to completion.Minimum Qualifications:Minimum 2+ years of experience in visual design, graphic design, or a similar role.Experience with data visualization tools.Ability to successfully pass a background investigation.Preferred Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in a related field.The salary range for this position is $82,000 to $107,000 per year.Pay and BenefitsAt Goldbelt, we value and reward our team's dedication and hard work.
