In These Times is looking for an outreach specialist and digital organizer to join our award-winning publication to focus on digital distribution and audience engagement. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

A successful Engagement Editor will help In These Times continue to build and grow diverse and intergenerational audiences with a focus on reaching working-class communities across the United States and internationally, and within labor, progressive politics, and justice movements.

This position is based in Chicago.

The Engagement Editor will focus on a range of areas including managing and executing the strategy and creation of newsletters, emails, social media, and securing additional avenues for digital distribution for In These Times content.

Another key objective includes developing and executing innovative digital strategies to reach and retain new readers from a variety of audiences and communities.

The Engagement Editor will also work closely with the publishing team and will report to the Executive Editor.

In These Times believes that strong applicants come from a variety of backgrounds with a variety of experiences. What follows are some qualifications we believe will help set the Engagement Editor up for success, but we do not want to discourage applicants who may have other experiences that would help them excel in the role.

Experience working with newsletters, emails, social media, and other digital outreach tools at a news or media organization (experience at other organizations is also valued).

Multiple published articles or other pieces of writing, or a demonstrated ability to write in a clear and engaging way.

A familiarity with journalism ethics and standards of publishing. A journalism background is a plus but is not required.

An understanding of internet culture and communities.

Experience working with digital analytics.

Strong interpersonal skills and ease working both independently and with teams remotely or on-site.

A dedication to continued learning by staying abreast of best practices and innovative strategies for digital organizing and outreach tools.

A deep understanding of In These Times’ mission and the larger progressive and organizing landscape.

Exceptional candidates may also speak multiple languages or have experience with the following:

Audio editing

Video editing

Digital graphic design

Digital events

This is a full-time, 40-hour a week position with generous benefits, including:

Annual salary range of $60,000 to $67,500, based on experience.
