Provides information and assistance as requested.Essential Functions+ Works with developers, builders, architects, and/or property owners to review narrow/nonstandard single-family development proposals for compatibility with zoning requirements and adopted pattern or plan books.+ Issues zoning approvals for narrow/nonstandard single-family building permits and tracks projects through the building permit approval process, coordinating with permit review staff where appropriate.+ Performs site inspections to ensure compliance with approved architectural plans and zoning requirements, coordinating with building inspection staff where appropriate.+ As needed, enforces zoning requirements by conducting field investigations in response to complaints, surveying the area for additional violations, and issuing violation notices.+ Provides assistance to the general public by receiving zoning violation complaints, forwarding information to enforcement officers for investigation, and explaining regulations and proper compliance procedures.+ Performs additional zoning and/or permit reviews and/or inspections as needed.Education/ExperienceWork requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.Required:+ Three years of experience developing or reviewing architectural or building plans interpreting zoning ordinances and conducting field inspections.+ Bachelors degree in architecture, planning, building construction, or similar field preferred.+ Educational experience may be substituted for work experience. Zoning enforcement experience preferred.Additional Information & Requirements+ Valid Driver's License is required.+ Ability to receive Special Police Commission within 60 days of hire and Certified Zoning Administrator or Official (CZA or CZO) certification within 18 months of employment strongly preferred.Work Schedule:+ 8:30 AM 5:00 PM with occasional weekend and evening inspections required.Signing Bonus:+ This position is eligible for a $5,000 signing bonus.+ Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.+ Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.+ Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.+ RetirementIf you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply.
