General Summary:

The Grants Writer will procure private and public funding to support general operations andspecific programs of The Maryland Zoo.

Essential Functions:

Primary Function:• Ensure that all grants are accurate, completed in their entirety, are well-written, andaddress the needs and priorities of Zoo staff and trustees;• Writeand submit grant applications and allnarrative/financial reporting as per grant agreements;• Research, identify, and submit possible private and public grantfunding opportunities;• Write, edit, and compose grant applications and proposals;• Track grants through theDevelopment database and adhere to strict deadlines;• Monitor government bodies and theiractions concerning Zoo business;• Perform other duties asassigned; and• Adhere to all policiesand procedures of the Zoo.

Communication (Internal and External):• In coordination with the President and Vice President of Development& Strategy, the Grants Writer will facilitate communications with private and public funders toenhance the stature of the Zoo and increase financial support;• Send grant proposals, acknowledgements, follow-up notices, andother correspondence to appropriatefoundation/organizations; and• Coordinate grant proposals with the appropriate departments,ensuring all grants are accurate and address the needs and priorities of the Zoo.

Management of Resources (financial, human resources, facilities):• In coordination with the database manager, maintain information in appropriate databases and in-house files.

Minimum Qualifications

:

Education:

Bachelor's degree preferred;and

Coursework in public administration and/ornon-profit management is strongly preferred.

Experience/Training:• Minimum seven (7) years experience writingpublic and private grants;• Knowledge of public andprivate grant funding;• Basic knowledgeof federal, state, and local government processes;• Knowledge of computer software andsystems, such as Microsoft Office software (including Word, Powerpoint, andExcel), Google Suite (including Sheets), and Adobe Acrobat; and• Ability to understandand explain financial statements.

Traits Desirable:• Excellentwriting skills;• Ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of ethnic,cultural and economic backgrounds;• Extremely well-organized with the ability to handle multiple tasksand manage projects;• Strong leadership, communication, time management, interpersonal,and follow-up skills; and• Self-directed, collaborative, creative, resourceful anddetail-oriented.

Equipment:• Must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipmentincluding computer, telephone, two-way radio,and vehicles.

Working Conditions:• Must be able to travellarge areas of the Zoo as needed, includingsome areas that require walking; and• Must be able to makepersonal visits to regional foundations (Philadelphia to Washington D.C., butmainly Baltimore); and• Must be able to travelto Annapolis on short notice.
