The Director of Public Relations (Classical) is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the awareness, public image, and reputation of the Kennedy Center and its two resident artistic affiliates: the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) and Washington National Opera (WNO). The Director’s primary focus is to support the artistic vision by crafting key messages and storylines, actively pursuing and delivering coverage and visibility through various media placements, and influencing platforms including social media and the website.Key ResponsibilitiesPublicity & Media Relations:

Design and implement comprehensive communications strategies that support the classical music offerings at the Kennedy Center. Craft and deliver messages that position the Center and its affiliates as arts leaders.Management of Staff:

Provide leadership and guidance to the PR team in achieving job objectives and goals.Content Generation/Production:

Work closely with the social media team to develop organic content consistent with strategic communications goals.Digital Program Content:

Review and approve draft digital and printed program content.Internal Coordination:

Initiate and attend meetings with leadership to develop strong messaging.Special Events:

Assist with the Center’s marquee award events and major international festivals.Finance/Budget:

Oversee and manage the budget for PR-related expenditures.Other duties as assigned.Key QualificationsMinimum of 8 years of strategic public relations management experience, with at least three years in a supervisory capacity.Demonstrated publicity results on a national level.Established relationships with key journalists and national media outlets.Appreciation and knowledge of classical music and the performing arts preferred.Strong interpersonal skills for professional interactions.High-level strategic communication skills.Outstanding writing and editing skills.Personal characteristics of poise and calm in stressful situations.Demonstrated supervisory skills.Ability to multi-task and respond quickly to requests.Candidate must be local or willing to relocate to the DMV area.
