Position Summary:

FACETS is hiring a full-time Director of Development and Communications to provide leadership and assistance to the Executive Director and Board of Directors in making FACETS an effective, thriving agency. The mission of this role is to provide strategic direction, management, and coordination for all fundraising and external communications efforts for FACETS. The successful candidate will build and oversee a comprehensive development program to include an annual strategy to promote and increase major gifts, corporate and foundation grants, in-kind resources, and volunteers to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization.

FACETS is a non-profit organization that opens doors by helping parents, their children, and individuals who suffer the effects of poverty in Fairfax County. We meet their emergency needs through our wrap around services and community partnerships, and help individuals and families experience safe and stable housing after years of uncertainty and instability. We strive to ensure that every person in our community has a place they can call home. Duties and Responsibilities:

Works closely with the ED to implement an overall development plan including annual giving; special events, entry- and mid-level individual, corporate, faith community, civic and foundation support; workplace giving; and regular donor communications—serves as liaison to the Board’s Resource Development Committee to seek their input and improvements on the annual fundraising plan while monitoring progress toward fundraising goals.

Collaborates with the Board of Directors to raise awareness and support of FACETS within their sphere of influence and works to ensure 100 percent board giving each year as well as regular updates to the board on their give/get status. Serves as a key member of the Senior Leadership team, ensuring close coordination between development and programs in achieving organization-wide goals and implementing the strategic plan. Ensures that development programs and systems are diversified, innovative, and developed to meet identified needs and interests of the organization, always maintaining contacts with donors to stay aware of special needs.

Prioritizes donor cultivation, stewardship, and appreciation including robust direct mail solicitation and quarterly newsletter campaigns and a major gift strategy with emphasis on large gifts, annual and multi-year gifts from individuals, faith communities, corporations, and foundations.

Research potential new private funding partnerships while maintaining grant submission cycles and tracking with existing foundations, corporations, and other entities; works with program staff in crafting proposals to address specific issue areas.

Engages funders through written communications, calls, in-person and virtual meetings, FACETS site tours, and other special events to promote FACETS’ efforts and accomplishments and convey the tangible results their support has on the local community; prepares the ED for funder meetings and follow-up activities.

Oversees gift processing pipeline in accordance with industry standards and empowers development staff with tools to enter donations accurately and distribute gift recognition letters in a timely manner as well as best-practice tracking and reporting mechanisms.

Promotes and sustains FACETS by building the organization’s financial resources through active leadership of the development team, particularly in areas related to volunteer management, community engagement, event coordination, and the communications plan.

Leads team responsible for FACETS’ external communications channels from website and social media to press relations and collateral to reach a broad spectrum of audiences, including donors, funding and program partners, volunteers, elected officials, local media, parallel nonprofits, and more.

Directly supervises and supports the Development Team to ensure each member is enthusiastic about bringing their best effort and ideas to the work and actively expresses their value to and growth potential within FACETS; provides ongoing performance support, encourages professional development opportunities, and welcomes improvement to all development and communications practices and processes.

Estimates an adequate annual development budget in support of effective services and operates within the approved budget. Collaborates closely with Chief Financial Officer in monthly reconciliation of fundraising income and works to ensure private funding has been expended in accordance with donors’ instructions.

Required Skills/Abilities:

Committed to eradicating the effects of poverty and homelessness.

Bachelor’s Degree or higher, with 5+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising and communications preferred.

A proven track record in building and maintaining a donor base with expertise in fundraising from multiple funding streams.

Exceptional written and oral communication skills; strong presentation and public speaking skills.

Experience in managing staff and an interest in mentoring a strong development team.

Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.

Experience in tracking data through fund development systems. Knowledge of DonorPerfect a plus.

Detail oriented and well-organized with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software, including Microsoft Excel.

Must pass criminal and Child Protective Services background checks.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.

Must be able to attend occasional meetings at other FACETS office locations within Fairfax County, including 3 annual organization-wide fundraising events each year.

Salary:

$90,000 - $105,000 per year.

FACETS offers a competitive salary commensurate with qualification/experience.

Benefits:

FACETS observes 11 federal paid holidays in the year, during which the offices will close. If a holiday falls on a day when a regular part-time employee is normally scheduled to work, the amount of the employee’s pay for that day is prorated based on the number of hours they are scheduled to work.

Reimbursement of work-related expenses including portions of mileage, cell phone and data expenses.
