The MFAH Marketing Department seeks a temporary editor/writer who can finesse language in a fast-paced environment. The top priority is editing all forms of communication produced by the department, including institutional emails, website copy, videos, and executive reports. An eye for detail is essential. The editor/writer works with colleagues across the Museum, so diplomacy and strong communication skills are also essential. As a writer for the department, the secondary focus is capturing the essence of the Museum’s exhibitions, events, and programming in copy for the website and other platforms. The MFAH is currently creating a new website, and writing and reviewing copy is critical during the coming months. The editor/writer reports to the head of the department.

Attends and contributes to departmental meetings that establish production schedules for all communication.

Edits first, second, and final drafts of all institutional emails, which are created by colleagues. Checks details against website copy and ticketing software to verify consistency.

Working with departmental web team, reviews web copy and details. Writes copy for web pages regarding exhibitions, events, and programming.

Assists in production of bimonthly printed calendar.

Suggests language changes that help smooth communication and tighten copy, for all departmental production.

Edits paid social media posts and contributes to copy that supports exhibitions and programming.

Edits executive reports and decks, and contributes to content.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

A love for detail, a skepticism of first drafts, a desire to meet deadlines, and a hunger to check and double-check dates, times, credit lines, and the fine print.

A passion for grammar, style, the English language, and, occasionally, other languages.

A love for creative expression, art, and culture.

Diplomacy and experience working in collaborative environments.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

A comfort with coordinating multiple projects simultaneously.

An aptitude for working within a complex technical environment.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, art history, or a related field

Will consider an equivalent combination of experience and education from which comparable and demonstrable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Five years’ experience in editing, writing, or journalism.
