San Mateo County Health is seeking well-qualified individuals for the position of Public Health Microbiologist I for the Public Health Laboratory.

There is currently one regular vacancy in the Public Health, Policy, and Planning Division located in San Mateo, CA, may occasionally travel/drive throughout the County to perform duties of the position. This position may be required to work flexible hours when necessary, including after hours, weekends, and holidays.

The Public Health Microbiologist I performs routine and specialized laboratory tests; and performs microbiological and related laboratory analysis in the areas of bacteriology, virology, mycobacteriology, mycology, serology, parasitology, molecular biology, and water microbiology.

NOTE: The eligible list generated from this recruitment may be used to fill future extra-help, term, unclassified, and regular classified vacancies.Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Perform microbiological tests for the detection, control and prevention of infections and diseases in the areas of bacteriology, mycobacteriology, immunology, parasitology, virology, and mycology.* Perform bacteriological examinations of foods for sanitary quality and presence of agents of food borne diseases.* Perform bacteriological examinations of water and wastewater for environmental health surveillance.* Necropsy of animal heads for examination of rabies.* Perform performance quality assurance tests on media, stains and reagents.* Maintain inventory of media and reagents.* Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.* Evaluate new and existing test procedures.* Write/update test procedures.* Advise physicians and others on proper specimen collection and transport techniques and interpretation of test results.* Instruct trainees.* Perform proficiency testing as required by federal regulations.* Interpret lab results.* Cross-train other microbiologists when rotations between sections take place and after receiving special instruction or training off-site.* Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

* Current technology, principles and application of microbiological tests and analyses.* Microbiological laboratory methods and techniques.* Operation and care of laboratory equipment and instruments.* Laws and regulations governing public health laboratories and clinical laboratories.* Proper safety precautions and procedures.

Skill/Ability to:

* Perform immunological, bacteriological, parasitological, virological, mycological, and biochemical tests and analyses.* Make independent judgments in evaluating the validity of completed laboratory tests.* Evaluate new procedures and make recommendations for future use.* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.* Train others in work procedures.* Keep accurate records and reports.* Follow written and oral instructions.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

Licensure/Certification:

* Public Health Microbiologist I: Must meet the standards and qualifications for admission to examination as a Certified Public Health Microbiologist.

Open & Promotional. Anyone may apply. Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, extra-help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score.

The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight:

pass/fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight:

100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
