Acquisitions Editor (Hybrid or Remote Work Model)

Fortress Press

seeks an Acquisitions Editor to join the editorial department. The Acquisitions Editor is responsible for acquiring and developing a comprehensive list of innovative, diverse, and transformational books for scholars, students, and leaders in Christian communities. We are especially interested in candidates with strengths in the fields of practical theology, ecumenical and interfaith ministry, and/or world religions.

This position is open to remote employees residing outside of the Minneapolis, Minnesota area. For individuals located in the Twin Cities region, this can be a hybrid position with time spent working remotely and in our Minneapolis office.

Key Responsibilities:

Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with authors to acquire impactful, high-quality projects.Identifies and develops new authors and projects for possible acquisition or commission; selects and guides authors and writers in consultation with the team and accordance with the plan.Prepares project proposals for consideration by the team; negotiates contracts with authors.Guides authors in the development of their projects and determines the acceptability of submitted manuscripts.Edits manuscripts to ensure that resources are professionally and theologically appropriate, technically accurate, and a strong fit for the target market.Participates in the development of titles, subtitles, and specifications; briefs covers; drafts catalog descriptions.Maintains deep knowledge of current religious and theological issues and trends, as well as competitors’ resources, to spark innovation and create deeply meaningful titles.Works with production, sales, and marketing staff in a team environment to ensure the success of each title and the line as a whole.Advocates for each book with colleagues and assists them in framing out production, sales, and marketing plans to ensure maximum visibility and sales.Listens closely to feedback from sales and marketing staff, gathers suggestions and ideas from customers, and shapes acquisitions strategies in response.Participates in shaping marketing plans, strategies, and activities through regular meetings and conversations.Participates in post-publication analysis of books.Desired Education and Experience:

Graduate degree in a liberal arts or theology-related disciplineDiverse network of contacts and active participation in activities and associations in the fieldPreferred Education:
