Salary: $60,000 base salary, health insurance, paid time off, and retirement.

Duration: Full Time


Time: 40 hours a week, schedule flexible and subject to change in coordination with the Executive Director. On average, one work day per week will take place in the Lyme office.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director and Editor, the Assistant Editor handles the following tasks:

  • Oversee The Outside Story (TOS) series, assigning and scheduling articles, serving as the primary editor, emailing finished articles to the artist and web coordinator, syndicating completed essay and illustration to the TOS editors list, and maintaining a list of completed articles and illustrations for payment
  • Write for Northern Woodlands magazine, including photo captions, short pieces, and longer feature articles
  • In coordination with the Editor, work through multiple rounds of editing for magazine columns, features, and shorter pieces
  • Assist in sourcing photos and other artwork for the magazine
  • Participate in editorial meetings to develop new content ideas, review pitches, and track progress
  • Participate in reviews of magazines in layout and help to coordinate with an outside copyeditor and designer
  • Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings, an annual staff retreat, and an annual in-person board meeting
  • Collaborate with Editor and Executive Director to develop content for the Northern Woodlands website
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Passion for forests, stewardship, the wood products industry, and environmental education
  • Knowledge of Northeast forest ecology and biology (highly preferred)
  • Organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to complete projects with minimal day-to-day supervision
  • Willingness to pitch in where needed on varied tasks
  • Enjoyment of a small office environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with magazine editing and digital media production (preferred)
  • Readiness to interact with a diverse constituency of readers and contributors
