W.W. Norton is seeking a Contracts and Copyright Assistant for its Contracts department. This employee will work closely with the Contracts Director, the Copyright Manager and the Trade Editorial departments.

Essential Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Review all permissions licenses for the trade editorial departments, approve and consult with the Copyright Manager whenever necessary
  • Revise and update permissions logs and notify relevant editorial departments of status and approval
  • Keep accurate records of all approved license terms, ensuring they are in line with in-house policies and assist trade editorial assistants with large projects
  • Review and approve requests for interior images from trade titles
  • Maintain lists of freelancers to engage on large projects, and assist Copyright Manager in maintaining permission guidelines for trade authors
  • Assist Copyright Manager with training editorial assistants on permissions procedures and in-house licensing policies
  • Submit titles for CIP data and copyright registration
  • Assist the Contracts Manager with drafting and submitting check requests for all contractual payments
  • Assist the Contracts Director and Contracts Manager on as needed basis for a variety of administrative tasks

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Employment eligibility to work with W.W. Norton & Company in the U.S. is required
  • Must be able to work from Norton’s New York City Headquarters.
  • 1-2 years of experience in the book publishing industry
  • Experience with permissions/licensing preferred
  • A basic understanding of intellectual property issues
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Attention to detail and excellent organization skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Technical Skills

  • Must possess strong computer skills particularly in MS Office suit

  • Annual compensation for this position is $48,000. All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location and like considerations. Generous paid time off, paid holidays, and summer Friday afternoons beginning in July
