Founded in 1962 by local actor Audrey Herman, Spotlighters Theatre’s mission is to provide the Baltimore community with exceptional, diverse, creative, bold, and affordable theatrical productions, which entertain and stimulate both audience and artists. The theatre produces 7-8 mainstage shows each season, supports development of new works by local playwrights, and has a strong theater educational program, offering instruction in theatre history and techniques to local schools and the community.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Artistic Director (AD) is responsible for developing and implementing the artistic vision and focus of Spotlighters Theatre in conjunction with the Artistic Team. The AD works with the Managing Director, Technical Director, and Board of Directors to ensure that Spotlighters Theatre is guided by its mission, vision and values and realizes its goals for artistic excellence, community service, education, financial stability, fundraising and audience engagement.

This is a part-time position with variable hours (estimated at 20hrs/week), including nights and weekends.

EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE:

The successful candidate must possess 6 years of combined education and experience. While a four-year degree is not required, a bachelor’s degree in theater, drama, arts administration or a related field of study is preferred. Candidates must also possess experience as an artist and/or in artistic or production management. The 6-year requirement may be in any combination of education or experience.

Experience may include:

Producing theatre, including budgeting, play selection, hiring, casting, etc.

Promoting theatre in person and through social media

Theatre education

Working with nonprofits and boards of directors

Marketing and fundraising

The Artistic Director will be visionary and pragmatic, with strong people and communication skills. They will be a strong problem-solver with organizational skills, a commitment to personal accountability of others and themselves, and the ability to adapt to sudden and unforeseen situations.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY/DUTIES:

Artistic Vision, Planning, and Execution

Recruits, oversees, supports, and mentors artistic personnel, including directors, performers, designers, and stage managers.

Oversees all artistic productions, including plays, musicals, cabarets, fundraisers, and special events.

Designs, implements, and evaluates workshops and classes in theater disciplines, with a focus on educational programs.

May direct at least one production per season.

Strategic Planning and Organizational Leadership

Serves on the Play Selection Committee to assist in choosing each season of plays and presents to the Board of Directors for approval.

Oversees the scheduling of the calendar year, in conjunction with Managing Director.

Community Engagement and Board Relations

Acts as a spokesperson for Spotlighters Theatre’s artistic purpose via speaking engagements and public appearances.

Reports to the Board of Directors on a regular basis to give an update on artistic activity at scheduled board meetings.

Financial Management and Fundraising

With Executive Committee, develops production budgets and marketing strategies to present to the Board of Directors for final approval.

Works with the Board of Directors and Managing Director to coordinate donor development and fundraising activities.

COMPENSATION / BENEFITS:

Position is considered an executive position with a salary paid bi-weekly. Benefits: Paid vacation and sick leave provided. No healthcare or other benefits provided. Salary starting around $20,000/year.
