Summary of Position
The deputy editor-LiLife/Act 2 is responsible for overseeing content for all platforms, including a standalone Sunday print section. The salary for this role is $115,000 to $118,000, commensurate with experience.

The successful candidate must be able to collaborate with colleagues across digital, TV, print, social media and video platforms.
Essential Duties & Functions
- Editor will conceive of and/or get pitches for cover stories, including having several brainstorming sessions with TV, social media, photo editors and photographers.
- Assess subscriber/audience metrics and act on the resulting trends.
- Oversee special projects, including: Graduation Issue in June, Holiday Shopping Guide in November and Holiday Lights in December.
- Supervise and edit events listings that start on the opening spread 12 weeks per year (MLK Day, Black History and Women's History months, and Memorial Day, etc.).
- Lead a team of freelancers serving digital and print subscribers.
- Help Newsday grow new and diverse audiences. Stories should focus on "good news" and trending content, education, finance, retirement, aging, history/nostalgia, affordability, living on LI, etc.
- Produce a schedule to keep team aware of what's coming up and who is handling what.
- Run weekly team meetings to plan production, brainstorm and invite ideas, as well as go over metrics to see what's working well.
- Monitor two section email inboxes, LIL[redacted] and A[redacted], for story ideas, reader feedback and inquiries (in particular for Ask the Expert) and reader essays for the My Turn feature; respond to and/or forward emails as needed.
- Coach freelancers in setting up photo assignments, including brainstorming questions and prompts for videos.
Essential Job Knowledge and Skills
- Collaborate with freelancers, reporters and photo and video editors to conceive and plan video assignments.
- Ability to edit lower-thirds and video text, as well as video scripts, as needed.
- Work with visual storytelling editors to conceive and execute digital enhancements such as animations, profile cards, etc.
- Knowledge of AP and Newsday style while proofreading every page in the section, making corrections and fixing as needed.
- Flourish and dmDesk skills preferred, to help with alternative storytelling.
- Ability and willingness to work a flexible and varied schedule, including weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed to support newsroom needs.
Physical Requirements
- This position is hybrid with a three-day-per-week, in-office requirement.
- Ability to travel throughout Long Island and the surrounding region.
- Driver's license in good standing and reliable means of transportation are required.
