Broad Communications is looking for a talented graphic designer to join our multidisciplinary team of writers, videographers, and science communicators. We are passionate about Broad Institute, about science and people who do it, and about the craft of visual storytelling. We are looking for a thought partner to collaborate with us to imagine new and creative ways to tell our stories, inform and inspire our audiences, and help us build our community, internally and externally, through thoughtful communications.

Working in close partnership with our current senior graphic designer, the position supports a variety of projects, from imaginative illustrations of a scientific concept, to retouching photography for news stories, to colorful street-level video billboards, to signage to support our evolving space usage, to college recruitment brochures, and so on. The graphic designer needs to be flexible and creative, collaborative and eager to jump in, and willing to speak up if they see something that could be improved.

Core ResponsibilitiesCollaborate with the science communications team to create illustrations and infographics for externally facing science news stories, press releases, electronic newsletters, and media kits.Crop, size, color-correct and retouch photography for externally facing news stories and press releases.Collaborate with the internal communications team to create visuals for Broad-wide campaigns as well as smaller, more targeted content.Create graphics for social media including Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.Collaborate with the video team to provide insight and assets for animation.Visualize complex scientific ideas via illustrations/infographics.Create custom templates in MS PowerPoint, MS Word, Google Docs, Google Slides, CanvaCreate graphics for events, such as invitations, flyers, signage agendas and slides.Develop logo and swag artwork.Interact with outside vendors such as printers.Design reports and donor proposals.Design brochures or ads for college recruitment or summer research programs.Provide and receive constructive design feedback.Collaborate with team members to refine the Broad branding and style, including official color palettes, typefaces, and templates.Support quality design throughout the community by providing custom templates and artwork.Participate in departmental goal setting and process improvement.Qualifications2+ years of experience in the graphic design fieldExcellent written and verbal communication skillsProficiency in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat and Photoshop essentialAbility to grasp complex scientific concepts and present them in clear, compelling designsProficiency in the handling of photography, typography, and colorExperience in building animations natively or in collaborationExperience in developing templates a plusSubmission of a design portfolio is required.
