REPORTS TO: Exec. Dir. of Data and Accountability

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The senior analyst on the Data Warehouse team plays a crucial role in the Office of Data and Accountability (ODA) driving the dashboarding and data access strategy of the district. This role reports directly to the Senior Executive Director of Data and Accountability. The senior analyst is responsible for leading the district’s PowerBI strategy; establishing and delivering the professional learning related to PowerBI and dashboards throughout the district; as well as informing the district’s strategy of longitudinal data use for answering policy questions. The senior analyst is responsible for overseeing larger data visualization projects, as well as completing ad-hoc and recurring analyses and data requests. The position requires strong project management and analytics skills, with an emphasis on data analysis to inform policy decisions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead Dashboard Design and Use Strategy

Maintain and advance a dashboard creation process in PowerBI, Looker Studio, and other visualization and reporting tools

Remain current on PowerBI features for dashboard creation as well as user functionality

Maintain and advance the use of reliable and resilient dashboard development process across tools

Understand how to leverage PowerBI reports and apps for data visualization and access across the organization

Ensure that the dashboard strategy roadmap includes monitoring reports on SIP data domains (Special Education, Multilingual Learners, Transformation Schools, Facilities, Transportation, Safety)

Develop and Deliver PowerBI and Dashboard-related Professional Development

Train analysts across the organization on developed PowerBI and dashboarding materials

Organize dashboarding materials within the department’s knowledge management structure

Support peer data analysts across the organization in dashboard development through professional learning resources and experiences

Respond to users’ needs by differentiating data dashboard content and design for specific audiences

Maintain an inventory of data warehouse and dashboard related trainings and determine new training and audience based on the needs of stakeholders

Policy-Informed Data Analysis

In collaboration with the Director of Analytics, identify areas for new analyses that are aligned to the district’s vision and provide actionable insights to leadership to inform policy recommendations.

Fulfill data requests from internal and external members from the BPS community by extracting data from internal databases, including ad-hoc and recurring requests.

Utilize the inventory of data requests to recommend new and cross-cutting dashboards and reports.

Connect data through the data warehouse strategy to allow for analyses across multiple student outcome metrics, adult practice metrics, and the regional model for school support.

Develop and maintain public-facing Power BI dashboard, including the ability to disaggregate metrics by relevant student groups to monitor opportunity and achievement gaps

Collaborate with analysts in ODA to develop common queries and code to increase efficiencies when filling data requests.

Perform various analyses on student-level, school-level, and district-level data and provide relevant policy recommendations based on analyses.

Generate reports for both technical and non-technical audiences based on results of analyses.

Provide technical assistance to school and central staff regarding data needs, assessments, and analyses.

Represent ODA at the school, region, and district team levels by providing direct services and support.

Perform other duties in the Office of Data and Accountability as needed.

Manage the collection of data for the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) outcome metrics dashboard across departments

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 5 years data analysis experience OR Master’s Degree in related field and a minimum of 3 years of data analysis experience

Strong analytic and data systems management skills, as well as extremely strong attention to detail.

Proficiency and/or expertise with statistical analysis software and programming languages such as STATA, R, SQL, Google Suite, Apps Script, LookerStudio, BigQuery, DAX, PowerBI, ArcGIS, etc.

Enthusiasm for managing technical projects with a diverse team to completion.

Excellent time management skills, experience balancing competing priorities, and prioritizing projects, and delivering high quality, on-time, results.

Excellent interpersonal skills and experience providing leadership and vision to staff; facilitating, motivating, persuading and building consensus across diverse audiences.

Experience applying theoretical best practices in a variety of applied settings, and evaluating whether applications have made good use of those best practices.

Experience and interest in working with internal and external partners in flexible, collaborative and empathetic ways.

Strong communication and writing skills to document how learning can be applied in practical ways

Strong customer service focus.

Strong problem-solving skills.

The ability to explain complex analytical concepts in clear and concise terms.

The ability to react to requests with both flexibility and firmness (and the ability to distinguish when to use which skill).

Ability to communicate with diverse audiences and experience with Boston, its neighborhoods and schools.

Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED :

Master’s Degree in related field

Knowledge of the Ed-Fi data standard

Knowledge of PowerBI

Ability to communicate with diverse audiences and experience with Boston, its neighborhoods and schools.

Familiarity with Boston and Boston Public Schools
