Assistant Director of Graduate Grant Writing and Professional Development

Job Summary:Strategize, develop, and implement new initiatives and novel models of support to increase graduate student, postdoctoral scholar, and faculty success in securing external training grants, fellowships, and similar awards. Develop communication plans to promote the research excellence of graduate students and postdocs to internal and external audiences. Manage all aspects of graduate student and postdoc professional development across the College of Engineering with particular emphasis on preparation for academic careers. Assist with identifying and applying for external funding to support initiatives.

What You'll Be Doing:Grant Writing & Training:

Strategize, develop, and implement plans to increase the number of major PhD fellowships, postdoc fellowships/grants, and faculty diversity supplements and training grants within Purdue Engineering.

Build relationships with major sponsoring organizations to understand review processes and be able to provide expert guidance and best practices to graduate students, postdocs, and faculty seeking external awards.

Provide direct writing and editing assistance as applicable.

Strategize, develop, and lead workshops and programming to provide assistance at scale which could include supervising peer mentorship teams and external consultants.

Graduate Student & Postdoctoral Scholar Professional Development:

Lead professional development efforts across the College of Engineering including management of the Graduate Student Advisory Committee, professional development workshops, awards processes and events, travel grants, teaching fellowships, etc.

Coordinate and partner with other units on and off campus (Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars, Libraries, Purdue Writing Center, Center for Career Opportunities, Engineering Schools, alumni, etc.) to provide professional development and other resources to graduate students and postdocs in novel and effective formats.

Develop and maintain key performance indicators to measure the success of various graduate student and postdoc initiatives related to career readiness, including transition into academic careers.

Communications & Promotions of Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars:

Strategize and implement communication plans to raise awareness of graduate students’ and postdoctoral scholars’ achievements to both internal and external audiences.

Oversee related web pages.

Explore new and expand existing communication channels such as a research blog, publications website, social media promotions, news releases, partnerships with related university units, etc.

Data & External Funding:

Track results of all efforts and provide summary reports as needed.

Identify and apply for external funding sources to support graduate student and postdoc initiatives when applicable.

What We're Looking For:Education and ExperienceQualified candidates will need:

PhD

minimum of 5 years of experience in grant writing within STEM disciplines

Demonstrated success in developing workshops and training resources

Skills needed:

Ability to strategize, develop, and execute professional grantsmanship training for PhD students, postdocs, and faculty is essential.

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and outstanding interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse group of graduate students, postdocs, alumni, administrators, faculty and staff.

Essential skills include problem solving, organization, time management, customer service, creativity, and professionalism.

Must be comfortable learning and working with a wide range of technologies, databases, and software applications.

Must be highly motivated, self-initiating, and a team player.

Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and make decisions under pressure from students, faculty, administrators, and staff.

Nice to have:

Experience working with external funding agencies is preferred.

Experience developing grant writing proficiencies in PhD students and/or postdocs is strongly desired.

Knowledge of graduate programs in Engineering will be helpful.
