SUMMARY:

The Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library (AUC RWWL) supports the teaching and learning missions of four institutions of higher learning that comprise the world's largest consortium of HBCUs-Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. Conveniently located and easily accessible to the campuses, the AUC Woodruff Library is the center of intellectual and social life at the Atlanta University Center.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library's vision is "To reflect the excellence of our member institutions by being the First and Best Choice for our users." The Communications Manager plays a key role in achieving this vision by developing and implementing a comprehensive communications plan that advances the Library's goals, increases awareness and use of its services, and strengthens its brand.

As both a strategist and tactician, the Communications Manager oversees a broad spectrum of internal and external communications, ensuring the production of high-quality materials. This includes crafting and managing news releases, speeches, opinion pieces, blogs, pitch notes, videos, social media, website content, newsletter copy, and other promotional materials. The role also involves providing brand management guidance. Leveraging a keen sense of storytelling, the Communications Manager brings narratives to life, captivating diverse audiences across multiple platforms.

Additionally, the Communications Manager develops innovative media strategies and compelling communications that elevate the library's visibility and demonstrate its impact and mission-critical achievements within the AUC community and beyond. The role ensures consistent messaging throughout the organization and supervises the Graphic Designer/Social Media Specialist, the Student Communications and Outreach Ambassador, and a part-time Web Services Coordinator, reporting to the Director of Planning, Assessment, Communications & Events.

THE IMPACT YOU WILL HAVE:

Strategic and Executive Communications:

The Communications Manager is responsible for the quality and effectiveness of the library's communications efforts.Lead the development and implementation of a strategic communications plan that supports the library's strategic plan.Establish annual priorities and SMART goals for each communications function.Write and edit executive communiqués, including speeches, talking points, articles, Board reports, presentations, strategic CEO correspondence, and staff messages.Research and draft op-eds, articles, and other content on a variety of topics for distribution across all communications channels.Provide support and counsel to library teams on marketing and communications efforts.Guide, produce, and review a range of communications materials, including press releases, attributed quotes, blogs, event scripts, talking points, prepared remarks, briefing documents, social media posts, website content, newsletter copy, and marketing collateral.Maintain high standards of quality and consistency in communications and branding across all channels and platforms.Collaborate with various Library team members and AUC stakeholders to translate strategy into integrated communications plans implementation and facilitate organizational alignment.Proactively develop messaging for key initiatives to shape communications strategy, building core narratives that highlight the impact and benefits of projects or initiatives for key audiences, supported by clear evidence and proof points.Ensure that key messages and complex narratives are consistently and articulated for public audiences.Manage the continued evaluation, development, consistency, and vision of the library's brand identity.Develop, execute, and evaluate innovative communications, marketing, and digital engagement strategies to enhance the library's image and improve communication effectiveness.Ensure the quality and timely delivery of all executive communications materials.Publications/Website/Digital Media:

The Communications Manager is the content and quality editor for the library's key print and electronic publications, website, digital displays, and social media.

Oversee the content development, design, and production of communications materials such as annual reports, newsletters, brochures, and signage, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.Identify internal staff and external vendors to write, edit, design, and produce photography and print publications.Oversee the creation of digital and social media strategies, campaigns, and content to engage and connect with our digital audience effectively.Ensure accurate, consistent, and timely delivery of key messages across publications, the website, and other digital channels.Media Relations:

The Communications Manager is the primary liaison between the library and the news media.

Will lead the development and execution of a robust media relations strategy to elevate the library's reputation, advocacy efforts, and overall organizational goals by relationship building with targeted media and securing story placements.Manage the library's crisis communications strategy.Prepare the CEO and other Library subject-matter experts for telephone, in-person, and on-camera interviews.Act as the primary media liaison for managing and responding to inquiries.Special Events:

The Communications Manager provides communications counsel and expertise to Library staff responsible for planning and executing special programs and events.

Assist with the development of the appropriate internal and external communications strategy.Handle executive communications, media relations, and publications, and oversee social media related to the event.Ensure that the marketing materials for external events hosted in the library have appropriate library branding and messaging.WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE:

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Public Relations, Mass Communications or related fieldsExperience:

Five (5) years of communications experience in a library, academic, or nonprofit organization, responsible for strategic communications, executive communications, media relations, publications, website/digital display management, special events communications, and brand stewardship.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strategic communications planning and implementation.Key message development, writing, and editing for oral and written communications.Problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making, and consistently exercising sound, independent judgment.Take initiative and embrace accountability.Shaping and translating complex messages into compelling, engaging content tailored to diverse audiences.Working autonomously in a fast-paced environment.Working flexibly, balancing longer-term priorities with urgent and changing needs.Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications, website content, and social media content creation and management.Interpersonal and management skills to interact with executive leadership, management, staff, cross-functional teams and vendors.Strong creative, strategic, analytical, and organizational skills.Demonstrate skills, knowledge, and experience in developing, designing, and executing communications and marketing activities.Demonstrate successful experience writing news releases and working with media.Writing (business, creative).Public speaking and presentation.Collaborating and negotiating conflicts with stakeholders.Delegating and directing the work of others.Producing and sustaining high-quality work (e.g., without errors and anomalies) on time.Have a working knowledge of:

Must be able to walk, run, reach, climb stairs, bend, and work outdoors in inclement weather.
