Our employees play an important role in shaping the future of San Francisco.Job DescriptionUnder general supervision, performs advanced professional librarian work; supervises the operations of a branch library or a department of the main library; supervises activities of subordinate personnel; and performs related duties as required.Responsibilities include:Interpreting, enforcing and carrying out assigned duties; making regular contacts with the general public and library personnel; maintaining awareness of current reading trends and literature.SUPERVISION EXERCISED:Supervises activities of subordinate personnel; may supervise the operations of a special library in another City and County department.Examples of Important and Essential Duties:1. Supervises the operation of a small or medium-sized branch library or department of the main library.2. Supervises and reviews the activities of subordinate personnel.3. Assists patrons in locating and using library facilities and materials.4. Keeps collection current and useful by recommending library materials to be purchased or discarded.5. Performs reference work, including research and preparing bibliographies.6. Plans and conducts programs for children, young adults, and adults.7. Catalogs and classifies library materials.8. Orders library materials and assists in determining sources of supply.9. Plans and sets up displays and exhibits.10. Writes reports and maintains various files and records.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of modern library methods; ability to work effectively with library patrons; evaluate library materials; plan library programs; prepare reports; and organize, supervise and delegate tasks.Minimum qualifications for the 3632 classEducation:

Possession of a Master's Degree in Library and Information studies from an accredited program.Experience:

Two (2) years of experience as a professional librarian equivalent to the duties of class 3630 Librarian I.Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirements by the final filing date.Special Conditions:1. Fluency in a variety of languages based on department needs.2. Twelve (12) months of verifiable experience performing duties of a Children’s, Youth or Teen Services Librarian.3. Valid California Driver’s License.4. Twelve (12) months of verifiable cataloging experience.5. Twelve (12) months of verifiable experience working with at-risk youth/adolescents.SELECTION PROCEDURESAfter application submission, candidates must complete the following:Librarian II CORE Examination (Weight: 60%):
