The City of Oxnard's Wastewater Division is seeking a Lab Scientist with strong organizational skills and excellent oral and written communication skills. We seek candidates with a positive and energetic leadership style who have a willingness to take a "hands on" approach to developing a strong team within the division. Strong analytical and project management skills as well as the ability to develop and recommend comprehensive solutions are required.

As a Lab Scientist for the City, you will play a pivotal role in performing quantitative and qualitative scientific chemical or laboratory analyses that comply with EPA and State of California water and wastewater regulations.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

* Review and analyze samples using sophisticated technical equipment; interpret data and prepare complex reports* Ensure that equipment is properly calibrated and maintained; perform routine testing and maintenance of equipment.* Plan, coordinate, and participate in special projects.* Peform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

PAYROLL TITLE/CLASSIFICATION: Laboratory Scientist

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This classification is distinguished from the Laboratory Specialist in that it provides professional chemical and biological laboratory testing and reporting.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED / SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

May lead paraprofessional and support staff by reviewing work and performing quality control. Receives general supervision and is expected to prioritize work to meet deadlines and to keep the supervisor informed of issues that would impact achievement of a deadline, organizational policy or procedure or inconsideration of risk management.

WORK SCHEDULE:

The normal work week is Monday through Thursday 7:00 am to 4:30 pm and alternating Fridays 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. In addition, this position may require additional hours to be available in response to peak workloads, activation of the Emergency Operations Center, and changes in department needs.

(This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.)

The following are the minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:

EDUCATION:

* Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology or directly related field

EXPERIENCE:

* Two years of professional, journey level laboratory sampling, testing and analysis experience.* Must be a current City of Oxnard Wastewater employee.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:

* CWEA Grade II Lab Analyst certification. (Must be attached to your application.)* Valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.

UNION MEMBERSHIP: Positions in this classification are represented by the Oxnard Mid Manager's Association (OMMA).

NOTE: For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office/Google) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.

Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.

Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.

This position requires a 12 month probationary period.
